LPT1 to Com1 reassignments

Post by Phillipx »

ok trying out something that i haven't seen on the forums. Basically the 25 pin "wide" "serial" parallel port at the back of the computer is a com port with these specific differences.

Com ports are bidirectional Parallel ports are not.
Parallel ports have 25 pins and Com ports have 9.

I am attempting to make a predator work with the parallel port. I don't think ill be successful but im going to try regardless. is there anyone at diablo who can tell me if this programmer is a bidirectional unit or not, also am i wasting my time?

if it works the command will be:

c:/mode lpt1=com1

but that may not work, and by the way before anyone says "do it the other way" it wont work the other way. thats the only command that will do anything. we will find out tomorrow.

*edited for grammar

nooo.... the 25 pin port is a parallel port for a printer... and the parallel port is bidirectional - ever see the settings for your printer where you can enable "bi-directional" printing????

you can't use the parallel port.. has to be a regular 9 pin serial port... you won't get it to work... yes, wasting your time...

if you don't have a regular serial port, then get the serial-to-usb cable and plug it in to a usb port on your pc....

Lew,

Your answers are usually correct and accurate but this time you are WRONG!
Your printer settings that give the option for "bi-directional printing" are just that, instructing the printer head to print
in both directions. This setting does not open "bi-directional" port communications.

GOTCHA!!!

Ha Ha Ha !!! Just the response I would expect. You are funny!

But you are correct in that the parallel port IS bi-directional.
On very old systems it may asynchronous, meaning communications can only move one direction at a time
whereas newer systems, that still have parallel ports are usually synchronous and can communicate both
directions at the same time.

I've been lurking here for the last year and a half but your response to this post forced me to register.
