Good running temp??

Post by kissankill »

What is a good tempture range the car should be running at.
Mine runs pretty consistantly at 208 degrees (has been as high as 216).

With an 180 deg t-stat you should be in the 185 range, thats what i see down here in southern florida on 80-90 deg days.
You need to lower your fan on off temps by another 10 deg over the canned tune for that t-stat as well.

Johan ...Just to clarify you are saying to lower ALL Cooling Fans AC Off/On to include the full range;

High MPH HS, LS and MS (6 settings) and Cooling Fans AC On HS, LS and MS Fan On (3 Settings) by 10 degrees even across the full spectrum.
Correct?

I'm seeing a consistent 182-187 normal cruising and 188-201 when Pony's are near and/or on the sticky hot/humid Virgina 90 to 100+ days. I have mine lowered at different levels for each of the 9 settings ranging from - 5 degrees at the low end to - 20 degrees when opening it up. Should I change it to an even 10 degrees across the board? One of your custom tunes has this spectrum of settings that I used.

Let me know and thanks.

Ahhh, finally the buy it now link. I need some specs MikeL! Not much info on it on your website. Got a PDF brochure? Predator trade in value? Mine is in new condition! $750 doesn't seem too bad from what I've read but I really would like to see some Dyno charts and a spec sheet as well as some good photos of it in action. I will buy, just show me the product please!

I went ahead and adjusted my fan temps an even 10 degrees across the map(200.19 and 209.19) and guess what temp @ cruising? Held 185 for a 90 minute trip in cruise....johan the man....

Dont take this wrong but for the life of me I cant seem to grasp the reasoning behind having a 180 stat and allowing coolant temp to reach 200 before Low Speed Fan comes on and skipping medium setting to allow 210 before Fan High speed fires up. What am I missing here. In traffic these cars heat up quickly. Im open to reasoning on why we would set fans this way. At highway speed there should be enough air moving that no fan or low fan is about all thats going to be needed. I thought AC required electric fan to run no matter speed to insure air flow over condensor. Im running a Roto-Fab CAI and its setup well to seal out Heat from under hood. Out on the open road I can run 5* above ambient air temp on IAT. In town once everything gets heat soaked I have seen 135 IAT after turning off for a few minutes to run in store. In traffic if you cant open up the throttle body good for a while to move some cool air through the intake IAT stays over 100 or so in Florida. Granted I am new to electric fans(old school) but I have had a few good running Mopars in my time, cooler was always better. 160 coolant temp will keep moisture out of oil. Oil will run about 15 degrees or so hotter than coolant. I realize fuel mileage, pollution control, State and Federal regs require enough heat to burn left over exhaust gases in cat's. I have my car with 180 Stat set at 185 Low Speed. 190 Medium speed, 195 High speed. On highway Im running 185, in town 188, 190. So I assume my low speed fan runs all the time in town. I run AC all the time anyway in summer. If Im out in left field please enlighten me. We have a R/T RT Charger also thats going to be cooled down as soon as Im on course with correct Fan settings. My 06 truck as you know has Clutch Fan, seperate condensor on side with its own Electric fan. I tow a trailer with my truck. It has towing package. The seperate AC condensor is the smartest design I have seen for Towing. In sunny Florida for sure.
As tuners go, you guys at Diablo rule. Thanks for your hard work and Knowledge. I have a SuperChip Cortex for my 2006 Ram Hemi. Its ok. They wont even reply to an email. The Diablo was my only choice for the Challenger R/T 6 spd, I want some control over tuning. Yea I still have a Sun Tuneup Kit. Timing Light, Dwell meter, Vacume gage. I miss those days. Love these new Mopars though. Thanks. JP

Good advice Hemi! Your actual temp probably does not rise over 190 because the medium speed setting is also the high speed fan setting. I have my settings nearly identical to yours but with the HS setting matching the MS settings at 191+/-. Being up here where the weather goes from -30 to +100 I have been able to watch the temps for fun year around. With those settings I don't seem to notice the fans running or any temps above the 186-188 until the outside temp reaches about 60 or so. Then the highest I have seen driving down the road on a hot day after stepping into it, is right at the 190-191, monitoring it on the diagonstic EVC readouts.

You guys with the 200 + actual coolant temps are getting into some heatsoak conditions that our cars hate, and loosing that good performance DS has programmed into the vehicles for us.

Talking about the opposite of hot.....It is a blast getting into these things when the temps are below zero! That cold air flowing into the CAI really lets you know some torque is on tap! I put this comment into a post a while ago, that one day after driving in below zero temps we were curious why the engine was not heating up too quick, we popped the hood and the intake manifold was actually freezing cold itself! Did some data logging on a dry road day, really did not lift no matter what the wheel spin was and believe me it was spinning at every shift with the winter Scorpion Tires trying their best, had to throw out the times I was trying to record because it just could not be that good.

Thats exactly why I run at 181/188/188. Actual coolant temp stays between 180 and 185 at all times, the heatsoak doesn't occur, and I have full power when I want it.

I run the 180 tstat but have not changed the fans. Too many reports of fans burning out because of too much use.

No point in running the stat without the fans. Without airflow theres no heat transfer.

And where have you heard of fans burning out? Thats bullshit. These fans are rated for tons of hours continuous.

Fans are Cheap. These fans will run Hundreds and most likly Thousands of hrs unless you got a bad day run.

About 30 yrs back I had too much fun one night and on the way home, burnt a dime size hole in a piston from a lean condition from a unadjustable carb on a 1979 Chevy Truck with a 250 cu in. Straight 6. Polution controll before computers. 40,000 miles. This thing ran at 220f normal. 230f no problem Chevy says, yea right. 15lb radiator cap relief. Cotton white exhaust pipe and plugs, ok Chevy says. Uh Huh, Ok. Intake Manifold cast with head. 40 miles of vacume hose and a real bad design. Never idled right. I ran on firewall every chance I got trying to break it. A large hole in piston is cool as hell. Blew every gasket and seal it had at 2am on last section of I95 not open yet in FL but done. My private short cut home. Being only 5 miles from the house I drove it on home on fire wall. Just before it blew it put a wheel balance wieght through inner fender about 115 mph. I found it under hood while changing engines. It was knocking real bad when I pulled in drive way. What a mess when the sun came up. My wife was hot. Her Parents were on a visit with us. She had asked why I had been collecting small block Chevy parts for months. Now she new. I set that Pickup up with nice 327. Loppy cam, Headers, Eldebrock High Rise Alum Intake. 202 heads. M21 4 spd. 650 4 barrel, Glass packs. Now we talking.

There is a moral to this story. 220 230 to damn hot and detonation sensors are a wonderfull thing. Dont turn them off. Im in a new learning curve trying to tune todays new Hemi but they have a load of potential thanks to guys like Diablo Sport Inc. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Im planning on a Zex 75 to 125 shot.

My temps are consistently lower than stock without my fans running extra duty. On warm days on the freeway my temps will run 183-187. On cold days 177-181. Sitting at stop lights in stop and go traffic is where the temps will eventually exceed 200 degrees and start to reach stock readings in the 210-215 range. But compared to the stock tstat, it takes a lot longer to get to these higher temps with a 180 tstat. So there is a benefit to the 180 tstat without the fans.

Here are just a few threads on fans burning out.
