Question for beta tester

Post by johan »

I just got a call from one of our beta testers for 06-07 cummins. He just traveled to CO. He is saying that his truck makes no boost until 2500rpm's and before that it just smokes like a freight train. He took everything off the truck so it is completely stock now and it is doing the identical thing.
Anyone got a clue on this one, I am lost, I told him i would ask on here as he is a little worried. No CEL either.
Sounds like his turbo is damaged, any ideas?
Happy 4th BTW..

Could be the turbo, but I'd check all the intercooler boots and tubing for a leak somewhere first.

I'd think that if it were a intercooler boot that it would make boost at low rpms but lose it in the higher rpms.

That sounds kind of like the problem I described in the other thread I started except mine doesn't smoke when it does it. I would have him try clearing the codes even if it doesn't show any present. That works for me.....

there could be a few things that happens.

1 he might have lost his turbo he needs to pull the air piping of and inspect it.check in play.or check and make sure he didn;t loose a hump hose or any air leaks.

2.is it just black smoke or white.

3.he could have a bad ecm or a sensor could be reading wrong.

just my o/p/

I had him check all hoses, they are good.
Smoke is black, presumably from turbo not spooling and not burning the fuel.

As stated, have him check play in turbine by GENTLY moving up and down. Some play there is normal. Front to back play means thrust bearing is shot and so it turbo. If that's the case, I don't know how he hasn't heard any bad noises because if it's chewing itself up, it's gotta sound nasty. He could've snapped the shaft also.

Well if the turbo blows a seal internal it will white smoke or blues cause the oil coming out the exhaust.like stated before check air filters and fuek filters and the basics.

give us a little info on how or when it started happening.

if all the sidden it just happens you might have a compuet problem.its hard to say what it might be not knowing how it happened or some more details.

It all starter all of a sudden on a long trim from FL to CO.
The guy said he checked all the hoses and he hears no odd sounds from engine compartment.
Myself knowing a little about the pcm's in these trucks do not think there is an issue with the pcm as if a pcm would be corrupt the vehicle will not run, period.
I did notice when i had the truck here for testing that he had excessive injector rattle, but if it was an injector problem i doubt it would smoke like it does and boost should not be affected.
