Identification of my Predator Unit and other dumb questions

Post by rchouser »

I bought an 06 f350 4x4 and the seller included a predator with the truck. I received no instruction book with the tuner, but, the seller walked me through the use of the UNIT. Awesome. He also advised me to find this forum. Again, Awsome. I currently have NO PROBLEMS, but, I would like to find out which model this is and maybe learn how to disconnect the unit from the ford port I would also like to be able to download.
Unit description:
I am slighly color blind so bear with me on the description. It is a blue/green lexan unit and looks like the picture u7165. It does NOT say ford on the front but has a round sticker type lable on the back that says 2005 6.0 The unit offers 4 tunes instead of the three I see being discussed in the f350 diesel forum. I have a 40 hp towing, a 65 hp economy, a 100 hp, and a Ford HP tune (this one I don't see anyone talking about). There is also the "backup" tune. There is a serial port on the bottom of the unit (or lower side if it is laying flat) and what I think is a 12 v power jack (for an ac adapter?) on the side directly left and below the cable out point on the unit.
Questions:
Is this a U7165?
Is this a current predator that can be updated?
Does it need to be updated?
I know that I need a seriel cable to connect this to my computer, but, do I need a 12 volt power source (for the top jack).
Better question, what is the top jack for?
Where can I get a manual?
Final and probably the most stupid question on the list: Is there an EASY way to disconnect the predator from the Ford Port when I am done "flashing" the PCM with a program change etc. Once that little clip "clicks" into the lock, it is MISERABLE to get to disconnect when I want to remove the cable.
Hope you all have a sense of humor because I know these arn't smart questions. thanks in advance. rc

here's where you can get all the downloads, updates, user manual, etc for your Predator:

yeah, disconnecting them is a pain... just cut out that little catch/clip on the predator plug - problem solved.

Factory hp tune is a copy of your stock tune that you can use to modify with the adjustable parameters in the tool.
As this tool has no adjustable parameters, there is no need to use it.

:? Thanks Mike, but you have just surpassed all my knowledge. I just meant "what happens if I load the tune"? I have tried the 40 and the 65 hp tunes. Each is significantly different both from the factory backup and each other. I havn't loaded the 100 hp because based on advice from this site it wouldn't be a good idea with my totally "stock" air intake and exhaust. I can ABSOLUTELY ignore the Ford HP setting if it is not a valid tune and needs "special equipment". Thanks to all that replied. This is a GREAT forum and an AWESOME product. I will learn as I go and thanks in advance for my next "not so bright" question. rc

according to Mike's reply, you can just ignore that HP Tune... it doesn't need any special eqiupment, but it just won't do anything for you/your particular vehicle. normally, the HP Tune is used to make adjustments to the tune that is currently installed in your vehicle. BUT, since Mike said that your tool has no adjustable parameters in it - there is no reason for you to use that tune.

Stick to the other tunes and you'll be fine.
