I stand corrected... The Nitrogen in the fuel is already liquid so it's very cold. When it's compressed it heats up to a more suitable temperature for improving the combustion process. That's what I read anyway.

My car dealer puts Nitrogen (brand named Purigen) in my tires. They say it helps reduce tire wear. I know it is
compressed when they put it in but I don't believe it is hot when they put it in and I don't think it has any
effect on temperature. Being that it is an inert gas I can't see any advantage to my combustion by having in my gasoline.

OK, I filled up with my first tank of Shell 91 V-power stuff. So far so good. Seems to run well. I've not logged yet. I just got it on the way home today. I will post more later once I've done some logging.

So far my knock is at 1.5 to 2. Same as before. No big deal. And I sure haven't lost any power. I was able to chirp 2nd with my engine at 195 degrees on a 98 degree day and I'm at 2,000 feet above sea level.

hmm, I don't think so... You were right when you said liquid nitrogen is very cold. It's VERY cold. Liquid from -346F to -320F. Below that frozen and above that gas. Gasoline freezes somewhere around -40F to -75F?

We use liquid nitrogen at my work. If we need it as a gas we use the boil off. I don't understand how Shell can put nitrogen into gasoline since it's a gas at normal atmospheric temperatures. But I'm no chemist.

little teeny tiny bubbles? they "oxygenate" it too right? but the point Someguys300c made is more interesting. Nitrogen is inert. It doesn't do anything. All it can do is take up volume -- less fuel per gallon. It's got to be something else if it's a better blend of gas. I'm guessing the nitrogen is just marketing hype.

"The Houston division of Royal Dutch Shell says that nitrogen enhances cleaning elements in Shell gasolines partly by making them more stable at the higher temperatures at which modern engines tend to operate, so the additive can work more effectively in current engines that use technology like fuel injection."

Oh, well that clears it up. I'm no chemist either but inert means inert. It's good for stuff like presurizing a spray can so it doesn't mix or change any of the contents. If it's inert I fail to see how it "enhances" anything. I liked the article where scientists were speculating that it could be some fatty amino acids that were added to aid in cleaning. It's likely they have improved something but I'm guessing that using "nitrogen" to sell it is going to be a big FAIL.

(I've never been wrong before, but suppose I could be this time :))

You guys aren't wearing your chemistry hats. You're thinking of shell's nitrogen as atmosperic nitrogen (N2). If you take a nitrogen molecule (N2) and combine it with an oxygen atom (O), you get N20. This is good stuff at the dentist or at the track, however it is still a gas at room temperature, hard to mix with a liquid. Take a nitrogen atom and mix it with 3 hydrogen atoms and you get ammonia (NH3). Interestingly, one part N and 2 parts oxygen create nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a dangerous byproduct of the combustion process . Shell claims their nitrogen is bound to cleaning additives (in the form of NR3CO) and extends the life of the additive. Critics claim that this may lean out your afr. There's no good testing either way.

I'm not going to run it until I see hard data one way or another. I think it's just a way for shell to put more additive (cheaper) and less gas (expensive) per gallon.

I'm going to try two tanks and see if there is any increase in MPG's. If not, I'm like you DiabloFan...I'm waitin' for the hard data.

I went to the track last night. I logged the KR during my runs. It only got up to 3 or 4 at the most and that was right before shifting. I did pretty well but nothing out of the ordinary. It's getting a lot hotter here so that may have had something to do with it.

I did get another tank of Shell. I'm giving it one more test/try.

Filled up with a tank of this new SHELL stuff this past week and have never heard my DashDaq inform me of "Engine Knock Detected" more than it did with this garbage. My DD has voice warnings and I have set it to warn me if the KR is 5 or higher. This thing was going off on a regular basis. I switched back to Good 'Ol "Petro Canada" 91 and the warnings pretty much stopped. When I run Sunoco Ultra 94 with the 93CAI tune, I have yet to get a warning at WOT (but the 94 stuff is pretty expensive right now so I will stick to the 91).
