re custom 7170

Post by jermort »

Brian,

Just wanted to give you some feedback on the custom you sent me.

I had a Colo emissions test last friday and the truck was as clean as it was 3 years ago! This tune is certainly not a smokey tune. (Only 4% opacity at 60 mph) The truck is clearly quieter idling; when I pulled up for my appointment at the emissions tester, there was a parked D@##e idling and the emission tester didn't even hear me drive up!!

So far, really like the shift improvements, throttle response, etc. Runs like it should have when it was stock!! Power & drive-ability feels good, will have some mileage numbers this weekend.

Any time frame for the 7170 update for legacy tuners!=??

thanks for your support, (again)

No actually it was up to 8 months without support(since last December of 2007).

But am now receiving support.

There are alot of tunes to write for these guys and We older trucks have to wait until all the Brand new trucks rolling out of the dealers get written first.

No biggie. I just didnt want my truck stolen for lack of PATS or something.

The tunes I can wait for. I get great mileage either way and I am in a 9200 pound rig base curb weight. My after market parts have made a difference the tuner alone can not make.

I actually received some after hour support from Brian last Friday night. Now that is FIRST CLASS SUPPORT.

Brief summary: Ontario, Calif. to Bargersville, IN, stopping at Grand Canyon; Petrified Forest & Painted Desert; and a day of driving in Tulsa, OK visiting my brothers. Returned via I-90, with trips thru the Badlands; Mt. Rushmore; and Yellowstone Park. Most of these highways have a 75 mph speed limit, and driving around Indiana (My Excursion carried us all in comfort and style) and I averaged 17.99 mpg on the 80 Economy tune from DP Tuner. Great results!! I'm happy with it!!
I get 20-22 in my Excursion on the highway and 18-19 in town on the Diablo 100hp tune. Have you tried it?
Yes, I have. Read my previous posts. Averaged 16.something on 100HP with Predator. And the DP-Tuner 80e is a lot more power than the Predator 100hp, with less noise from the injectors.
Almost forgot to mention my mileage is at 65 mph instead of the posted 70 Interstate I-90 speed limit. The extra time saved at higher speeds actually doesnt equate well to the extra fuel spent. The terrain is mixed mountains and plains Seattle to Spokane WA. At 65 the trip took 25 minutes longer each way and I got 4 mpg better over a 700 mile trip.

While we are on the subject of fuel economy. I run with 285 60 18's. My spring/summer tires are Yokohama Geolander HTS and they get about 1 mpg better mileage than my Toyo Open Country AT's I run in the winter months. I dont have my foot deep in the pedal all over town. Just when another truck(especially a Duramin, or a Goins) rolls up and wants some of my black smoke!

Looking into the memory upgrade, it looks like it will really happen, and soon.

Brian,

I'll be towing my 7,500 lb tt in a couple of weeks. Not knowing just how aggressive the custom was that you sent me, I was just wondering if you recommend that I leave the custom in? I'll be towing in the mountains of Colo up to about 9,000'. I guess that I could always put it back to stock if I have to?

Thanks, hope you all at DS have a great holiday weekend!!

You'll be fine with that tune. It's not too extreme at all and should stay relatively cool as far as EGT is concerned. The altitude tables are done as well in the tune so it should work out well for you. Let me know if anything. And yes, if there are any issues you can take the tune out.

Brian,

Feedback from my weekend towing experience:
( 7,500 lb tt - mountain towing 6,000 to 9,500 altitude)
couple of minor issues.

When coming off of a high load to no load (topping a hill) in third gear (auto)at above 2700 rpms in cruise, moderate to severe throttle 'hunting' would occur. Twice had to disengage cruise to alleviate.

Egt's climbed to 1300 + (pre turbo) at high load in third gear. Pulling 22 lbs boost, 3000 rpms. Because EGT's climbed past 1300 and were still increasing, I would have had to defuel within a few seconds, but topped the hill first.

Upshift at medium load second to third (T/C not locked) didn't happen a couple of times, rpms were in the 2500 - 2700 range - had to either let off throttle or give it more.

On the plus side

Most shifting was improved, only had a couple of 'hard' up shifts. Down shifting under load was good, very controlled

EGT's were generally less than with stock tune or 60 hp DP tune. 900 pre turbo was not often exceeded except on really hard pulls.

Never had an overboost CES, didn't throw any codes. 24lbs was probably highest boost that I noticed ( but I was towing between 6000 and 9500 ft of altitude)

Fuel mileages for entire trip was ~12.5 plus or minus - probably 50% of trip on 'cruise control'

All in all, this looks like a pretty good tow tune for the 7.3 - could probably use some fine tuning before making the tune generally avaliable.
