Timeing problems

Post by zinc01gt »

I am considering the diablo flash for my 2001 mustang gt. I currently have the basic bolt-ons(cat-back,xpipe,CAI,pullys,70mm TB). I am having problmes with the MIL and noticable pinging. I am on my 3rd engine from Ford factory due to bad seals resulting in hydrolock and another due to burning up the bearings. The dealerships will not address the pinging and I do not believe the mods I made would result in the pinging either. I think the engines timeing from the factory were never correct. Would the dibalo flash be able to retard/advance the timing to correct the problem. It pings at WOT and if I down shift to 4th at around 80mph.
Thanks!

Have you checked to see if there is a chip plugged into your Computer? Some of the CAI's can lean out the car too much which could be part of your pinging issue. What octane fuel are you running in the car? You might be able to fix the issue by just stepping up a fuel grade. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? I recommend changing them every other oil change due to them being on the small side.

I have been the only owner so I know there is not a chip, although I tried a diablo chip a couple years ago and it pinged a lot and you could not get it programed correct. I have tried the highest octane out here in Arizona as well as octane booster and it still pings. I do not thing the fuel filter has been changed in a while. Would the O2 sensors possible cause this if they were not put in correctly, that is the after cat ones put in front? I am really frustated with it at this point becaus I can not drive it like Its meant. Any suggestions???

You got cats on this car? A bad coil can send raw fuel to the cat too and fry it prematurely. So a bad plug wire or fouled plug can have the same result too. You probably solved this a long time ago, but hope this helps. I hollowed the cats on my truck and either the pinging went away or it was too loud to hear, also had headers and Flowmaster. My pinging was VERY similar to what you are describing. The truck was a '01 5.3 blown Silverado, not your average pick'em up truck. Putting a lower temp stat was the best thing I did for the pinging too, it was a 160* Hyperstat. What about LTFT's too?
Good luck.
