I smell antifreeze...

Post by thealiffs »

:( :( OK......I have an 05 dodge ram quad cab 3500 dually, 5.9 cummins, I have installed K&N intake system, and power puck, and have the predator tow tune programmed into my truck and run it with the puck switch on 60. I still have the factory 4" exhaust stock on it (just recieved my mbrp 4" cat back today)...but anyway, I was towing our 32' cargo trailer to sc yesterday, I was coming up a long, large moutain, traveling about 80 mph, I noticed my engine temp gauge rose just above 200 just after that I smelled a strong smell of antifreeze in my cab, I let off the throttle and slowed down to 70 mph. The temp dropped back to 200 and the smell went away. I just babied my truck the rest of the way home. Not sure what happened...any guesses? I thought about taking my truck to the dealer to do a pressure test on my cooling system...maybe a hose or clamp going bad? Did I hurt my engine towing with the puck and predator programmer installed? [/b]

I would guess that when it got a bit warmer it let a bunch of water (antifreeze) into the overflow. Which of course would gush in and stir up so the smell could get into the cab. I really doubt you hurt anything. Do you have egt guauge? I would not tow without that. These programmers can create a lot of exhaust heat. One thing I wish they would not have done away with in 05 was the ability to turn off overdrive. Maybe you have a standard but on some long pulls with my foot in it I see egt temps a bit high for to long. Which means slowing down as I can't just take a lower gear.

thanks for your imput rram. I do have an automatic tranny. I just purchased an egt gauge and boost gauge with pillar pod, I should get them installed this weekend along with my 4" catback MBRP exhaust. I hope ur right about the overflow...I never thought about that! What engine temp does ur truck run when towing up steep grades? Is it normal to run just above 200? rram, I see ur have the same truck as me basically....do u recommend a boost fooler? if so, what type? also, what tc and shift kit do u recommend? thanks, chris

not to bud in but ya a boost fooler would be good, quadzillla makes one and bd diesel also, the pred doesnt boost fool which is weird, even on tow and with the puck on i bet u could see over 30psi,and without one the ecm will defuel, ya u will be surprised how hot the egts are when towing when u get ur pyro hooked up,ive seen over 200 also, its normal, now 220 or 230 is getting pretty hot, cant help u on the auto stuff but im sure somone will chime in,

mine will get over 200* with a hard run, but havent smelt the anit freeze yet, and yes these predators get hot, on extreme from a 60 to 110 punch I hit 1525* yes get ur pyro in, and with my boost i will hit 37psi, but if i lug it in exteme the clutch will slip.

I have an after market tC, and really like it. What brand I am not sure, its built in Edmonton Ab. and I just got it from a local tranny shop. I think any good name billet tc is tons better then any stock one.
I use the quadzilla boost fooler and it does help. I have not really watched my temp to much, As long as its in the brackets I am ok with it.
I had a shift kit in my truck which was done first. then I had the TC put in. Then I had a stock valve body put back. It was way to hard to drive. I shifted so hard I thought I was going to tear my truck apart. I would 80km/hr and it would shift into overdrive and lockup at the same time, this was so violent the I had to learn to drive and take my foot out of it to let it shift. Anyway its much better now with the shift kit and only the tc. It still locks in hard but not feeling like I am going to break stuff. And while towing my tranny temps are way down from the old tc which must of bee slipping.
