Benefits of changing shift points ?

Post by Nazab »

Please advise what are the benefits of changing the shift points . Does it only mean that the maximum RPM is set now at 6000 RPM ? Is this the only change , or are there any effect on the shift points throughout the whole RPM range as well ? I mean when you raise the shift points to 6000 RPM is it similar like changing the gearbox software on other cars gearbox to sport mode for example ?

Changing the shift points will only change the wot rpm shift points, it will not change anything else in the shift logic.
If you have an srt8 raising them is recommended, i do not recommend to do it on a 5.7L unless you have a good cam in there.

Hi Johan ... I have the 5.7L standard cam. So you don't recommend raising shift points to 6000 RPM ? Is there a risk of a damage on the long run ?

No real risk of damage, you will just shift way past your peak power.

It might sound better and feel better (the butt dyno) but you'll lose performance. :)

You might be out of your power range at 6k shifts on a 5.7 but wouldnt that throw you into a better spot on in the powerband on the next gear

It all depends right? how much and how long are you out of the powerband at the top end compared to how much for how long you gain at the bottom end. TQ vs HP will be more or less important at one end than the other? You need to look at a dyno curve to get a good guess and then experiment at a track. Where do the 5.7's generate peak power? I think it's well below 5500? I don't remember.

I wish I could raise my shift points. It shifts just a bit shy of 6100 and drops the tach to about 4200, which is still good part of the curve, but it accelerates so much harder in the lower gears that more time in each would probably help alot. :(

But... you're driving a 6.1L. You didn't keep your 5.7L did you?

Never had a 5.7. Both my Chryslers have been 6.1s.

I believe the 5.7 is at peak at 5500rpm or close to it...........I tried putting the "stock" shift points on my Daytona last night and hated it with a passion.......just felt like they cam to soon and was a sluggish transistion into the next gear (reset TCM, increased shift firmness)...........the 6000K shift points give you a "lunge" into the next gear into a great spot in the powerband

Actually I think the 5.7 reaches peak power at 4800rpm

It's only track times that can tell you if you've improved performance. How it "feels" is a whole different thing. Personally, my car is a daily driver and I don't get to the track that much. I'd set mine to whatever feels and sounds best 'cause that's what would put a smile on my face the most of the time :). I'd change it to whatever performs best at the track.
