U7198 - *File Check Sum Error* , part 2

Post by MI99XPL »

Well, I worked up the nerve to install the tune on my new PCM (the original one was fired when I went to install the 2.13 update), and same problem. The truck won't start.

The difference this time is that I'm back to my stock radio (I tore out the aftermarket radio and amp when the amp stopped working). So now my truck is sitting dead in the garage. I really don't want to spend another $500 at the dealer plus the tow to fix it.

Does anybody have any ideas how to get it working again?

Hi 06MonteSS,
I got the same error message when I went to restore it, the check sum error.

Thanks,
Andy

Well, I got the truck back from the dealer yesterday, fried another PCM. I used to tune my truck with no probelms in software version 2.04, sometime i wouldn't even set the parking brake if it was sunny outside. So I think it has something to do with the update to 2.13.

Can the tuner be check at Diablo Sports to see if it updates a PCM on thier system?

Thanks

We have been using 2.13 for a few years now, with none of these problems.

It sounds like you may have a wiring issue in that truck, which may be causing the failed flash.
What was the error message on the tool?
Also, there should be no reason they charge that much to fix it, if you have the old PCM we'd love to take a look at it and see if we can recover it.

Hi Mikel,
Is it possile to look what the error message was on the programer without trying another flash? Meaning can I plug it into the OBDII part and bring up that info? I can take a look at it tonight when I get home and let you know. Otherwise all I remember is it stopping at 91% and saying *File Check Sum Error*. Both PCMs stopped at that point and I got the same message.

I hope it's not the wiring, cause I know wiring is a horrible, time consuming headache to try to find problems in. Do you think it would be? I know when I restored my tune before sending off the programer to update it to 2.13, it worked with no problems, like it always did in the past. I left my aftermarket radio faceplate on, amp hooked up, didn't pull any fuses. I don't remember, but I probably did set the E-brake because otherwise the DRL would have come on since I did it in the garage. Some times in the past I wouldn't set the E-brake. And it was only a little bit of time between the 2.04 restore flash and the 2.13 tune because Diablo was really good about turning the programer around.

I did keep my PCM this time. I was hoping to have it sent out to see if someone could fix it. I'd be willing to send it in if that would help figure out what my problem is!

I was a little upset about the price also. But I live in the Detroit metro area and even since I moved here I noticed the dealers here are "by the book" kind of dealers. Where I grew up and you'd mentioned something doesn't seem right, a lot of times the dealer would look into it and find that the time to fix something wasn't as long as the book said it was. Or that they would buy reused items and put them on instead of GM only part. The dealers around here are more like that's what the book says so that's the price. It kind of sucks.

Thanks
Andy

OK, I made a call in to Diablo Sport tonight and while I was on hold I was scrolling though my Predator screens. I noticed that in the Tuning menus, just after I pick the auto trans option, it skips right to the option of installing, moding, restore, & troubleshooting. It completely jumped over the Vehicle data backup menu (it page 5 & 6 in my manual). Is that normal of 2.13? In 2.04, it wasn't. But my manual came with my Predator, so maybe it's out of date.

After waiting on hold for 15 minutes, my wife came out and told my supper was ready, so I hung up before I could talk to anybody. And after supper it was past 7:00, so I can't call back tonight.

Thanks

Well, I got it all worked out. It turns out it was the Predator that was causing the problem. I called Tech support at the begining of April and they told me it's not normal that the tuner didn't back up my tune before writing the Diablo Tune. So to fix it, I upgraded to the 9r13 style tuner for $100 (using my tax refund money).
I ended up taking a deep breath this weekend and giving the new software a try. The upload worked better than it did on the old 2.04 style software. And I like the new features, like adjusting the idle rpm. (I dropped it 100 rpm at idle and it's so smooth at the stop lights/signs! It's nice).

Thanks everybody for the ideas and help along the way.
