I just purchased a U7180, downloaded the latest update (9r07) and I still get the "vehicle not supported" message. What are my solution options?

Either post the calibrations here or have the truck updated at the GM dealer.

Does the Predator read and save the backup file from the truck?

Yes, it got as far as asking my transmission type and then gave the vehicle is not supported message.

Should I just send this back to the dealer, or do you guys think there may be a solution to my problem? I don't want the return date to expire and lose my money.

Can you upload a copy of the backup file and post it here, that would make it easier for us to figure this out.

Not sure I'm tech savy enough to do that, but I'll try.

The tool shows the original backup tune under "show last tune written", but when I try to download it onto my computer it says that the vehicle must be "flashed" or either it gives a message: "error reported- could not find tune". This may simply mean that the original backup tune was not actually written. This is beginning to get a little out of my league; I thought this would be a little more user friendly.

well, if the "last tune written" says original backup, then that means you have not installed a diablo tune onto your truck... the original backup was restored to the truck, so that's why when you try to download it from the predator, it says it can't find the tune.
you have to hook up to your truck and go to install a tune like you did before... and after it makes the backup copy of the original backup, unplug the predator.
then you can hook up to your pc and export the original backup from the predator to your pc and post it up here.
