Data Logging & Knock Retard

Post by cleary524 »

Quick Question: I tried doing some data logging for Knock Retard LT and ST yesterday. Is it unusual to get 0* for both readings? Total Knock Retard stayed at like 15* and would come down as acceleration request incresased, but the ST and LT didn't budge up from 0*.

Just trying to figure out if that is normal.

I am running 93CAI on U7135 for Hemi motor.

Thanks,

answered you on the LX forum, but zero knock is ideal.

I've added 6% fuel across all ranges but still get 1 to 1.5 deg long term knock adjustment and my AFR is at 12.0%. I hate to keep adding fuel and I might go back to get the average as close to 12.2 as possible.

I need to go back and see where the knock happens in the RPM range and take a couple degrees out of those ranges . . .

If you have any long term knock that means you have even more st knock.
Do you have a catch can on that thing?

yes, I put that in a long time ago but I don't get very much oil in it. I'm going to get a couple intake gaskets and see what the inside of my manifold looks like (and clean it up while I'm there . . .

Your avatar looks like a 6.1L? You should be catching 10 ml per 500 miles, or more. If not, you may have a crummy catch can or have it hooked up wrong? Haven't heard of one that collects less. My theory is that maybe the oil squirters generate more atomized oil that goes out through the pcv valve (and then there are a couple like Mike Levy's... I think he has an oil squirter aimed directly at his pcv valve :))

Pulling the manifold will tell the story for sure. Don't forget to take pics and post up.

I bought the SRT8 used and the catch can was already installed. I never really looked at it close (until today). The hoses were backwards but the biggest problem is the fittings not being the right size for the hoses. They are seep/leaking oil now. I've had the car for over a year and do my own oil changes and never saw any leaks until today. There is oil in the belly pan so I'm going to get new fittings and hoses in the morning and then I'll be cleaning the underside of the car . . .

That should improve the efficiency of your catch can a bit :). Is it one of the quality ones? Don't know what size fittings you have on the can but the stock pcv hose is 1/2" inside diameter. I'm sure you know to use fuel line or something other than heater hose. Lol, not sure if it's worse having oil seeping all over the outside or seeping into the manifold.

This appears to be a cheap one and if the new hoses and connectors don't improve the performance, I'll get a Billet Tech. If the performance does improve, I'll pull the manifold in a couple weeks and clean it up a bit. Sould I get the gaskets from Dodge or is there a better alternative???

After more datalogging, I am getting long term knock only at WOT and above 4000 rpm. I pulled 2 deg out of the top two ranges but it didn't seem to improve the LTKR. It may be the oil . . .

I would use the dodge gaskets, the knock you see if very likely due to the oil.

Even if the catch can performs it takes a while for the existing oil in the manifold to dry up and/or get burned.

Last night I pulled the throttle body and looked inside and there was a nice puddle of oil. I've only driven about 20 miles after changing the hoses so I haven't given it enough time to see if the catch can is doing anything but I did have my wife reach inside the manifold with a rag to soak up the puddle to speed in the cleanout of the manifold. I was kinda hoping her hand would get stuck in there so I could take advantage of her misfortune . . .

I just looked in our parts room and I found a small Ingersoll Rand filter with a .3 micron coalescing filter (for oil mist). I might put that in and see what that gives me after two weeks.
