Issue with LT KNk

Post by Illss1 »

First off i got 79k on my car in my sig and just got a catchcan installed 2-3 days ago so tonite i'm logging my car an noticed that i'm getting ST Knk at 3.5 deg at WOT and LT Knk at 1.5 deg at WOT ........my question is (not sure if i'm understanding this wrong ) at 1.5 LT Knk or at any # in LT is it a MUST to disconnect the battery then make any adjustments needed via handheld because of the permanent timing pulled from LT or could i just make my adjustments and continue to get rid of Knk ? Also i assume i got gunk in my intake (cleaned it last year ) how long will that stay without pulling the intake off? TIA fellas

if you're getting any LT KR you should clear it with a battery disconnect BEFORE evaluating whether a recent change to timing or fuel was effective in reducing Knock as a whole.

Whether you clear LT kr right before flashing the PCM or right after is irrelevant. Just do it before test driving and logging to evaluate your change.

Example:
WOT timing SHOULD be 32degrees but ST KR is taking 2 degrees and LT is taking 4 degrees for a final timing advance of only 26 degrees. If a fuel/timing change was made BUT LT kr was NOT cleared, St KR might now be 0 but LT will STILL be 4 degrees for a final total of 28 degree of timing instead of the desired 32 if 0 LT or ST existed!. Eventually LT might slowly readjust itself and lower BUT ONLY until ST KR raises its ugly head again.

But why should you have to wait and see if your changes were effective?? Clear LT KR from the get go!

You have a time frame on "slowly"? I'm under the impression that "slowly" is a matter of seconds at most?

LT fuel adjust faster than LT knock, simply because there can be both negative and positive StFuel driving it. You can see it.

Since there's no thing as -%ST knock only 0+, I've never been patient enough nor ever seen the rationale to wait for LT to lower. I clear it with a battery disconnect and move on.

Well, you actually have to get out of the car and do something with a wrench to disconnect the battery (or I think it's fuse #11? for the PCM). And then you have to re-calibrate your auto up/down windows :). When I go out and fiddle with a tune I run down the freeway, log, pull off at the next exit, make adjustments with the tuner and make a run back to the other exit, repeat as necessary or until I run out of time or think I've drawn too much attention.
