Tuning for nitrous and need some help

Post by FourSix »

Predator PN U7000
Revision 7r50d (old as dirt I assume)
2000 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 5 speed.

I recently got a nitrous kit (Harris Speed Works wet plate kit) for my GT, and have sprayed the 75 shot on the factory tune, but would like to use my Diablosport to tune for a 100, or even 125 shot.

I have two options for tunes on my Predator. The "Performance Tune", and "Factory Performance" tune.

I assume that the "Performance Tune" already has advanced WOT timing built into the tune, and is not ideal for nitrous use unless one did datalogging and compared the performance tune, and stock WOT timing and adjusted accordingly.

Now, for the "Factory Performance" tune, is this literally an adjustable copy of the "Original Backup"?. If so, I assume this is what I'd use to tune the nitrous for as far as pulling timing and adding fuel. Not to mention this way I can correct my speedo for my 4.10 rear gear.

I need to know if there is ANY timing that would be added in to the "Factory Performance" tune, for any reason at all (aside from adjusting on my end, but I haven't). I would be thrilled if I can make adjustments from this tune. In addition, when adding/removing timing, are the figures you adjust on the Predator a percentage, or actual degrees of timing?

I know to be safe I should put the car on a dyno, but I have hit the 75 shot with no timing pulled a few times and so far so good. I know several companies recommend running the stock tune all the way to a 100 shot, but I have a high mile engine (142,xxx) and rather be down a few peak HP but be safer in spraying.

Thanks for any insight that you guys can give me.

But would running the "Factory Performance" tune not be running the stock tune, with room to make adjustments? If in the end I need a custom tune, then that's the route I will go. I was hoping that the "Factory Performance" tune would allow me to basically adjust the factory tune to the point I can dial back timing and add fuel. I am very familiar with the Predator, just trying to confirm if the FP tune is or is not a tune-able "Original Backup".

I wouldn't have a problem about running the 75 shot on the stock tune, but I can't calibrate my speedometer without running either the FP or Performance Diablo tune, and I detest switching back and forth before having to spray. Plus for the 100 shot I want to dial back the timing and be able to add fuel if needed.

This is entirely up to you...

If it were my car, I'd run the tune to get the benefits of reduced TM, better throttle response, and pull a few degrees of timing from there for the N20. The car will be more fun all around if you do it that way.

Thanks for the input.

What is reduced TM though?

Just need to clarify, but are you talking about running the "Factory Performance", or Diablosport "Performance" tune?

I am weary about running the Diablo tune with nitrous. It's been great all motor, but the added timing bothers me. The factory performance tune allows me to adjust the speedometer and says before the tune is loaded it does not increase horsepower or torque.

I assume this is because of no timing being advanced, and no fuel curves being adjusted. I take it as a modifiable STOCK tune. Is this correct?

Bump again.

I really need a sure-fire answer to this, please:

Is the "Factory Performance" tune a modifiable stock tune? As in all stock parameters, no timing added in?

Id runthe performance tune.

TM is torque modulation, which allows the PCM to limit torque output.

Well the problem with the performance tune from my understanding is that advanced timing is already built into the tunes, correct? Without knowing how much it's not easy to just pull timing and go, since it's pulled in percentages and not by degrees. Nothing against the tune, it's great for all motor, I just don't want to screw up with the nitrous. I could datalog the performance tune and pull timing accordingly, but I rather just work with the stock tune.

There is no option for torque modulation on my tuner though. Maybe that is an option on the updated version but I have a fairly old version of the tuner. Rather not get into that though, torque is goooood....

yes, your assumption is correct.
And finally, thank you.

I will run the nitrous with the "Factory Performance" tune, dial back the timing for the 100 shot, and richen up the fuel curves if needed, all while adjusting for my rear gears and having the ability to adjust the rev limiter and whatnot.
