Looking to buy a U7198, couple ?'s

Post by highlife756 »

I have a 98 Blazer (S10 style) that I swapped a 99 Silverado 5.3 motor and transmission into. I also swapped over the harness and computer so I basically have a 99 Silverado as far as a programmer would know.

I have no cats and no EGR setup on it. I have been reading about how some of the 7198's can disable the SES lights that are caused by these missing, and some cant? Is it because of an update? If so, what version do I need to look at buying so I can disable these codes? Not really looking for performance gains (although not opposed to it) basically just want it to disable these codes and change my speedo and shift points due to tire/gear changes.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Only the older U7198 Predators, like mine (version 2.13 or less), will disable the EGR codes. Newer Predators with version 9rxx require you to send your tune to a CMR Tuner to do that. If you're looking to buy a used unit, look for one that's a version 2.xx. Versions older than that can't be unlocked from the vehicle it was first installed. That may be incorrect but that's what I've heard a few times. AND, if you find a 2.xx version, make sure it is unlocked. I've seen them on eBay but they're usually listed without details about the version or whether or not they're "unlocked". They also think these things are worth the same as a new one.

Frankly, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for one of these older units. These can be upgraded to the newer versions for another $99 +shipping so by the time you do that, you would be close to paying what you would pay for a used newer version. I paid more than that for mine (not from eBay) but haven't decided whether to upgrade mine yet. I like the option to disable the codes myself if I ever needed to and I'm not sure I would gain anything by upgrading either.

You can't data log with these older units is a disadvantage. You can only monitor the real time data. I get around this by using another interface and software to log data on my laptop and transfer the data to DSLogRedux. You probably don't have this option available to you however.

Going a step further, why not just buy a new one anyway for $299.99 at Concours Direct ( http://www.concoursdirect.com/99gmgasveprp.html ). You get a warranty and it's not that difficult to have a CMR Tuner like 06MonteSS on this forum to disable the codes for you. You can data log with these so that's an advantage over the older units. If you go this route, buy the interface kit with it for an additional $30. My whole setup, including the data logging setup I mentioned, cost me more than the $330 you would spend on this option.

Once you get one of these, you ARE going to want to tune things for a little performance and gas mileage. So, get one that will do the most for you.

I hope this helps a little and sorry for the long post.

Here's one on eBay right now. It says it's unlocked but doesn't specify what version it is. I suspect version 9rxx meaning that in order to disable the EGR codes, you'll need someone else to do that. It also comes with the interface kit. If interested, ask questions before committing to buy. It has a buy it now option for $250 and also a reserve price. Even at $250 you may save $80 but you won't have a warranty if somethings wrong with it.

Thanks for the info rmck490. I emailed the guy on ebay and it is fully updated. So if I go this route or buy a new one that is updated and have someone like 06MonteSS disable those codes for me, how much does that run $?
