I was speaking to my local dealer yesterday over the phone. I questioned whether he had a U7194 in stock (09 1500 Silverado 4.8L CC). The answer was a little confusing to me so I hoped that you all could clear something up before I decide to purchase from them or somewhere else.

So, here goes, he tells me "I usually stock the models for Chevy/Ford/Dodge. If you decide to buy, call me, I'll pull a default model down, load the templates, and have it ready by the time you get here."

I was in a hurry, didn't have time to get him to give details. So my question is this, is each "model" U7198, U7194, etc only different in the software loaded on the programmer? Meaning, does DS send vendors blank slate models that are a series like 7100 series, 8100 series, 6100 series, and the software load is what determines the last two digits? Would this imply that he basically has the particular series of programmer in stock, and just needs to load the proper software version for my truck? I'll ask today when I go by there, but I hoped to know before I get there.

I only ask because I am truly interested in buying, but I want to be informed as much as possible about these products. I want to make sure I have the latest updated firmware because he doesn't have any of the PC interfaces in stock. I don't want to get ready to give it the programming and find out I need to update the firmware before I can use the programmer.

I've researched this topic but haven't found a definitive answer. Hence me registering here to ask as my first post on this particular forum.

Yes, sounds like he has a U8000 on the shelf that he can convert to a U7194 if you want it.

Would this be considered a standard practice if so? I'd like to try and support a local performance company, even though slightly higher in price. They agreed to take $30 off their normal price.

They have a Dyno their, $150 for 3 pulls. I figured that if I buy now from him, maybe I will get some good fortune in the future after I add more upgrades. They are listed as a GM/Ford CMR on the main DS site, but didn't seem to fair a great deal of information concerning the data logging features of the DSPred. He seemed to be more prone to using the Dyno to fine tune the truck. Maybe then update a tune file and load on my programmer?

One other question, if this is a u8000 and it's made into a u7194, will I have issues updating the firmware in the future via the updates DS supplies? Will I be able to do it myself with the PC interface since it's a U8000 convert?

Yes, standard practice, thats why we offer the blank tools to dealers...

It will update just like any U7194.
