Just bought a 2003 Ram 2500 QC 4x4 as a winter vehicle. I have changed plugs, wires and verified good internal condition via a leakdown test on all 8 cylinders. My issue with this truck is the lack of part throttle torque at lower rpms and overall throttle response. It idles well and if I floor it the truck accelerates very well. I have monitored the fuel trims with my cheap scanner and they are within spec. The only spec that seems odd is the TPS percentage is at 15% at idle but I have read that others have the same value on their drive by wire hemis.
The truck seems very sluggish and it seems that my foot has to be at least 2/3 to the floor before it drops a gear and gets up to 3500 where it starts to pull. This is quite the opposite of the gm gas trucks I have owned. The gm engines tend to have good throttle response and pull well until 4000 where they just fall flat.
I bought a Trinity the other day and tried all 3 tunes after I filled it with 93 octane. I noticed a slight improvement in the higher rpm ranges but it still has poor part throttle torque and response is sluggish.
Is there a tune available that will give this truck some real low end torque and snappy throttle response in the typical driving rpm range (1500-3000) ? It almost seems like this engine has too long of a cam duration for a heavy truck. I would gladly sacrifice top end hp for increased torque at low rpm in this truck!
The only thing that is not stock on this truck is the muffler, which is a very loud Magnaflow that the dealer put on since the original needed replacement. I will gladly put a quieter one on if this low restriction muffler is affecting the torque at low rpm. Otherwise it has the 3.92 diffs and stock size tires. The engine has 60K miles on it and as a last resort I have ordered new fuel injectors to make sure my stock tune is as good as it gets. After they are installed (likely tomorrow) I will re install the 93 tune and see if that helps.
I also plan on addressing the mushy transmission shifting with a shift kit Diablo doesnt come up with a solution soon for the 03. The dealer where I bought my Trinity said that they were working on a trans tune and I can wait for that.
In the mean time, does anyone have any tips on tuning these trucks to have some bottom end torque and snappy throttle response?
Thanks,
Rob

03 models have a separate controller for the Electronic throttle controls, which are not accessible in the tunes.

Correct, the TCM and PCM are separate but you can do the TMR mod or upgrade the PCM/TCM to the 05 hardware and you will also need the engine harness.
