Buying a used Trinity

Hello everyone. So I would like to purchase a used Trinity from a friend of mine and I am wondering if it would work on my car. He has an 06 Mustang GT and I have an 07 Shelby GT 500. I have found a lot of discussion on unlocking certain tuners. Does he have to do this to the Trinity before i purchase it? How is it accomplished/ How would I know when it is done and ready for use on my car. Thanks in advance for your input.
