Updated my Trinity Crom and lost 2003 Ram Hemi option

Post by blueramhemi »

I hope I did not get burned by the dealer that sold me my trinity but this is what happened.
I was looking for tuning ability for an 03 ram 2500 hemi that I bought as a second truck. It is sluggish at part throttle but runs strong at full throttle. I just wanted to add bottom end throttle response and low rpm throttle response and torque.
The dealer sold me their most expensive tuner and told me it was the only one that worked for an 03 hemi.
It didnt seem to add any performance at all and I verified this with my gtech. The truck has been parked at my cottage and I didnt really concern myself with the lack of zip since I rarely drive it.
I just sold my other truck and will be using the Ram now when I need a truck and the lack of part throttle power is really getting annoying. I have had 2 other Ram 2500's but they were both cummins (one 12 valve and one 24 valve) so perhaps I am just expecting too much. The truck I just sold was a duramax LMM dually but I certainly dont expect that much jam. I rarely hit wot with this truck but when I do it accelerates very well for a 6000 lb truck.
So today I uploaded the latest mega crom version 1r08b in the hope that the 2003 model year was getting some support.
Now when I try to input my vehicle type it no longer gives an option for 2003 Ram 2500 with a 5.7 hemi ? My only option was to input a 2005 hemi and there was no difference in low rpm performance. I didnt have a safe place to try wot but I am fine with the stock wot performance anyway.
Prior to installing the tune, I did a leak down test, installed fresh plugs, oem wires, 2 new coil packs (they were showing signs of corrosion), checked fuel pressure, flushed cooling system, installed new air filter. Yesterday I put in new injectors and a new fuel rail to rule out dirty injectors.
So what is the story on the trinity? Was I scammed by the dealer who sold it to me? He did show me a web page from diablosport that showed the trinity would work n the 2003 Ram but would not provide transmission adjustments. When I look now it says 2005 up for the hemi.
Will the new Crom work at all with my 2003?
Can I buy a custom tune and load it with my trinity?
Thanks,
Rob

It does not show 2003 but you can pick the 2005 and it will work just the same. You will see better shift and throttle from one of the tunes, but you wont be able to adjust them for the lower end setting that you are looking for.

I am still looking for a solution to give this truck some snappier performance. Since my last post here I replaced the exhaust system with a brand new OEM Dodge system and a high flow y pipe and cat from magnaflow. Also 2 new o2 sensors from the Dodge dealer. Also a K and N filter installed in the factory airbox. So the truck is now completely stock and all performance related parts are replaced in the fuel/air/ exhaust systems. I have tried every tune in my trinity and none of them have made any worthwhile improvement. The 93 octane tune may have a slight improvement at wot but it is difficult to judge. The screen does not give an option for 2003 but I was told to input 2005 and it would work except for the trans programming.
Is anyone with an 03 hemi Ram getting any results from a trinity tune?
Can I buy an 03 specific tune somewhere and at least use my 600.00 trinity to load it into my truck?
Is it possible my Trinity is defective?
As a side note, I have had several tuners over the years and they all made a significant improvement to the factory tune so I am aware of the potential SOP feel of an aftermarket tuned truck both diesel and gas. I have now ruled out any possible deficiencies with my truck due to its age so I am wondering if this trinity just has no affect on a 2003 Ram ?

Actually, I should just ask this: Does the Trinity actually do anything to enhance A) fuel delivery B) timing in an 03 Ram hemi?
A: at full throttle (open loop)?
B: at cruise and or part throttle (closed loop operation)?

Second question, Does the intune work for an 03? Ram 2500 hemi ?

I just spoke to another guy who owned an 03 ram 1500 and tried a Trinity . He felt no difference at all but thought he noticed a slight ping under load when towing in the 93 octane setting. He traded his for a Superchips and said it worked well especially when towing.
He was under the impression that the Trinity only changed the timing on an 03 or early 04 Dodge.

Anybody from DSP out there that can give me a definitive answer as to what this tuner changes in my engine tune? I was told by one of your retailers that it would make a remarkable difference in torque and 2 or 3mpg mileage improvement. Believing that I have always thought that my Cat was plugged or fuel system was in need of a tuneup. 1300 dollars later and my truck runs exactly the same and the trinity does nothing. Now that I have dumped all this cash into making sure my "cottage truck" is 100% dialed in I am angry with myself for not researching the best option for tuning my truck and just trusting a sales guy. It cost 600 bucks here in Canada and that would have paid for a Cat back and CAI .
I also just tried the mileage setting tonite on a flat stretch for 22 miles and it got 17.2 mpg (on the overhead display) at 50mph (cruise control on) and exactly the same when I returned it to the stock tune on the return trip. I have also been monitoring the pre cat exhaust gases with my inovate wideband since the new exhaust system was installed and it doesnt seem to change with a tune installed.

timing and fueling are optimized in the provided tunes.

The problem is with the 03 ram the trans has a mind of its own and there is no throttle adjustment available, thus its tougher to feel the gains in the seat of your pants.
