Finally got around to doing a log after getting rid of that POS Volant CAI. Besides the cold start issue I was having with that thing and the crappy Power Core filter they sent, my numbers are much better.
With the Volant, I was at +13 for my LTFT's along with pinging at WOT......Now after putting the OEM air box in and AirAid tube I am at -3 (still have to do a WOT run). HUGE difference. Suprised at how much difference there was between the two.
Lew or Mike (or someone else that may know),
why does the Volant change the AFR so much compared to not just the AirAid but all other CAI systems on the market? Volant claims you do not need a tune with their system but it seems you should be tuned for it with numbers like that.

RE: First Log WITHOUT Volant CAI
Good question, I do not know.
Lew sees more CAI logs than anyone I could imagine, and he's always found them to produce odd results....

Hi Blacky,
I know you are over at the SilveradoSeirra.com forum as well. So am I!!
You had trouble with the Volant CAI?? Interesting. I love mine. No problems at all. I also have the Power Core filter. Again, no cold start issues (I live in Michigan), DTC's or anything else.
My truck is a 2005 6.0L LQ9.. Might that be the difference???
Very Interesting...

yeah, those volant powercore filters SUCK.. and not literally.
hate 'em... always tend to make the trucks run pig rich...
better off with a drop-in filter or a different CAI altogether...

Couldn't agree more....After reading the charts from the Black Bear Performance CAI testing, I reinstalled my OEM air box with my AirAid tube. Also threw in an AEM dryflow panel filter and no more headache. The OEM box with intake tube performed better than most of the CAI's.

Based on your experience, and Monte's advice... I replaced my "Powercore" filter with an AEM dry filter... 21-2100DK.
It "seems" better... Too soon to tell. Maybe it will help the MPG?? I need a few more miles before I can send Monte the required files for his "professional" tune...
Thanks for the heads up

Re: First Log WITHOUT Volant CAI
Well, let's see. Go to vararam.com, click on the bench flow tests, and you find out that a factory air box with a Green Filter will flow as much air as a cone on a tube. The BLack Bear Performace CAI tests have a major flaw. Do you run down the street in box trailer with a fan pointing at your radiator? You will get better facts hooking up a Trinity and playing with the Cristmas tree! Hooking up a scan tool and looking at the outside temp reading in my rear view mirror on a hot summer day you could watch the IAT temp climb 30 to 40 degrees above the mirror reading sitting at a stop light, the temp drops quickly when you start rolling. Vararam used to use K&N filters, but switched to greenfiltersusa.com when they discovered that they out flowed the K&N by at least 20%. I have been using their products for about 9 years. My Tahoe has a VR-6 with a Airaid tube-she starts singing loud above 2 grand, and I had to lose the VR-3 because of the way the tube mounts on to the engine. My newer Silverado has the Tripower system, and both of them are real bug catchers. When I asked Vararam about tuning tips, they said Diablosport is what you want, so thats why I am a
Diablosport owner.
