Finally Installed Catch Can but Still Seeing Knock

Post by Dguth »

I know I should have installed this earlier but I finally got my catch can in and had it installed this week. Have a 2012 Jeep GC SRT8; has about 11,000 miles on it. I definitely had oil in my manifold, as I removed the throttle body and put my hand in there and felt the oil. I didn't have time to remove the manifold to clean it properly.

My question is wouldn't the oil in there ultimately burn off and how long would that normally take?

I had been experiencing some pretty significant knock in both my stock tune and the 93 Trinity tune. I attributed it to either bad gas or oil in the intake. I am thinking it might have been both. The car was pulling up to 12 degrees of St knock and 3.5 degrees of LT knock with WOT throttle passing manuevers (60 to 100mph).

Does this kind of knock seem too high if I did have oil in the manifold. Could there be some other problem I should be investigating. Should I look into replacing the plugs?

After replacing the catch can, I took the truck out for some runs since the PCM was reset becuase I unplugged the battery. Again I started seeing the higher ST and LT knock. It looks like by advanced spark readings are sort of erradically bouncing all over the place which is why I was wondering about the plugs and impact oil in the manifold might have on them.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am going to start doing some datalogs. I tried for my 1st time the other day but evidently didn't do it right as I only was logging the ST and LT knock with spark timing but didn't get the other variables...

Here's a couple of logs I ran today going to and from work. I'm not sure how to read these things yet. Any thoughts on what I should do? First log shows ST Knock as high as 9 with LT at 1 and 2nd log, ST as high as 6 with LT at 1...

Wow that seems high. Im no expert but I have read that if you have ANY long term (LT) knock then your really hurting performance. On my ram the highest I got stock was around 6 I believe, after a custom tune it rarely gets over 3 and thats short term not long term.

takes a while to clear all the oil from the intake unless you remove it and clean it out.
