5.3L vortec oil consumption
bought one of these and installed it today hopefully will see if turning off the AFM stop the oil mysteriously disappearing. Did take a little time but the staff at diablosport was VERY patient with me. So hopefully here in about 2000 miles i wont be a 1.5 qts low.

Re: 5.3L vortec oil consumption
well just got back from a 2500 mile trip with the AFM shut off and the problem is worse. However i did find some things out so dont give in yet if your looking for answers. 1 i got 15.6 miles per gallon through out the whole trip. That is including the drive to and back on highway and in town driving. I thought that was interesting considering i got the same with the AFM on during previous trips. 2 sounds a whole lot better with the magnaflow exhaust now dont have the buzzing sound anymore. 3 i checked out chevy bulletin#10-06-01-008g and it seems like i waited to long to shut if off so looks like my rings are to caked in crud to make a difference. Will be doing a piston top end cleaning or pulling the pistons and replacing rings, but will def be keeping AFM off. So all in all im still happy with the intune just seems i waited to long. moral of the story DONT BUY A GM AFM MOTOR!!! and turn the AFM quickly even if you dont see a oil consumption issue YET!!
I have the aluminum block and its a 2007 model with 79000 miles on it

This is just a thought. I'm from south Louisiana and I've heard alot of people saying thier burning oil or loosing it somewhere with the newer gm trucks. Have you ever tried changing to 10w-30? It's seemed to help alot in the past you may hear a slight clatter from the rocker arms at initial start up due to the slightly heavier oil when it's cold out. But that's normal on around 99-05 gm trucks were 10w-30 is suggested. It seems they changed the recommendation to 5w-30 to stop that clatter on initial start up but more people see more oil consumption due to early morning blowby than having rocker arms clattering.
