VAG 3.0T

Post by Mike_Levy »

Volkswagen Audi Groups (VAG) 3.0T takes wonderfully to a tune. They open the bypass valve way too early so its always blowing off boost. Keep it closed to allow it to make full boost and gains are huge. Stasis is making 70hp with a tune, AND AUDI IS SELLING THEIR TUNES through their dealer network, so you know its safe. Only reason I didn't get it is because they don't offer a pulley tune, and I have every intention of pulleying.

This motor is used in every vehicle Audi sells except the A3, R8 and TT. Its in the S4, S5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7. Gotta think theres money to be made if you can make the same power and offer pulley tunes. The tranny should be easy. Its the same ZF 8 speed as in the Chryslers.

Picked her up yesterday. Straight trade for the X5M. Feeding the truck was killing me. Can't deal with $500 a month in gas.

Think 310hp is WAY underrated. I doubt it has any less than 375. Wonder if the first owner had it tuned in the past... He didn't have it for very long.

Was talking to a shop in Poland about recommendations for tuning. Sounds like this is an easy tune. I'll be down there in December if you wanna have a look.

"I think any good tuning workshop can do it for you. It's not very difficult to tune this engine. I can't recommend you specified place, because any tuner do the job different. Like you know the most important are fuel maps, and dyno are most important.
I know that one customer gain +120 hp, some people gain +90 hp, but the most of all around +100 with tuning."

so...do they have software/hardware available?

I can tell you with all certainty that if you had software, yes, most any good tuner could get it done. I know Brian would take it on in a heartbeat....

They don't. And I have no idea what any of them are using. I'm able to get into some stuff with VAG-COM (VCDS), but not far enough in to do tuning. I can just change parameters and some coding.

I really can't justify $1800 for a pulley and tune, so if you don't want to deal with it, I'll probably just let it be. Really don't need another 425+hp sedan, if its gonna cost me that much. Been there, done that, a bunch of times.

Okay, screw this. If you're supporting the lowly Calibers and econocrap Hyundai's then you really need to support either Audi or BMW to jack up your cred, because when you support just the low end garbage, people are going to think you're a low end company. With all the complaints lately, maybe thats what you're becoming. You can only live on your name for so long.

Lord only knows who's stupid decision it was to support the Caliber SRT4. They certainly don't have the market you're asking for from the other people. I've seen one in my life and that was at a dealer. Their total production was less cars than either of the Germans make and sell here in a month. You want 10k cars from everybody else, but they barely made 2k Caliber SRT4s. 2k<10k, and you know they aren't all gonna buy tuners! Stupid, stupid, stupid decision. :normal:

I can't promise you 10,000 sales for the 3.0T. I can certainly guaran-damn-tee more than the few hundred you're gonna sell for the CSRT4 though.

you are not looking at the big picture...for starters, there are way more CSRT4s that you seem to think. More than Neon SRT4, and thats still one of our best selling applications. We are going to sell thousands of CSRT4 tools, right off the bat, with no need to spend thousands marketing to a new platform, etc. Plus, its a DCX PCM, not exactly so difficult to get into, and Map out, which have to be considered when releasing new applications. Add to that an enthusiast owner base, and a turbo under the hood, and its a recipe for success. Been there, done that, got the sales to prove it :)

When I tell others we want to see 10K buyers, its to make it obvious that 50 people on the forum will not get it done, but I never expect to see 10,000 people asking for something, there weren't even that many people asking for 11+ HEMI ;)

I get out to automotive related events rather frequently. I see tons of BMWs in the enthusiasts hands, and being modified, etc. For every 10 or so bimmers I see out there, I might see one Audi in the same boat...if anything, I see BMW happening first, but they use quite a few variations of the same PCM, so you gotta pick a small group of vehicles and work from there to even get started...

Actually there are less than you think. The production numbers are miniscule. For all of 2008-2009 they sold less than 1000 of them. And 2007 wasn't much better. Looking it up, the total number was 5,563 for all 3 years. On the other hand, there were over 25,000 Neon SRT4s made.

Why would you support vehicles that everybody else does? Thats like jumping off a bridge because they did. It makes more sense to go to an untapped market, with no competition. And considering the 3.0T is used in the S4, S5, A6, A7, A8, Q7, and Q5, it seems like a pretty safe market with plenty of owners who are looking for more power. Plus, the motors already make more power than they're allowed to put out. Audi cuts boost at high rpm via a second throttle body. Program that to allow the boost to flow and the gains are right up there with any turbo ricer out there. 50-70+hp is cake without even touching the timing.

I dont follow...what do you mean by support vehicles everybody else does?
Who supports Caliber SRT4? Nobody. Thus, we will sell a huge number of tools to them.
The only reason Hyundai is on the map is again, its got a turbo and there is nobody else offering anything for it. It only makes sense...

Supporting what everybody else does, like if you were to go to BMW instead of Audi. BMW has lots of tuners, including Cobb in the US. And I've found that money means nothing to the owners. They're going to buy from the well known companies, regardless of cost. In trying to sell my piggyback module, I'm finding that most owners already have Dinan tunes. While $3500 for a tune seems ridiculous to me, apparently to them its not.

Big deal, the Hyundai has a turbo and nobody makes anything for it. There are dozens of cars that have forced induction and no support, most of which outsell the Hyundai, will make loads more power, and have owners who can actually afford a tuner. The entire German market is force fed motors and little to no support in America. And you know the owners aren't scraping the bottom of the barrel to pay for the cars, like many econobox owners do. Plus a force fed 6 or V8 is going to double or even triple the gains you're going to get from a puny 1.6-2.0L 4 cylinder.

The 3.0T has been one of Wards 10 best engines for 4 straight years. How can you not want to work on the best? http://wardsauto.com/vehicles-amp-techn ... dohc-v-6-0
