2014 Ram 2500 6.4 Trinity feedback

Post by dallas02 »

Hi, everybody. I haven't had much success in finding feedback for a Ram 6.4 tune so I figured I'd throw my out here for anybody who might be interested.

The truck is a 2014 Longhorn 6.4 with 3.73's. It's oil patch truck and it takes a beating in Northern Alberta.

The dealer advised me to do an update on the unit. I got the DS software uploaded but there was no update necessary. It took twice to do it and since I'm not computer savy I don't know what I did wrong the first time and how I made it work the second time but it worked and the DS app is on my desktop now. I also registered it.

Now to for the fun stuff. It was easy to set up for my truck and it took about 30-40mins to do the initial tune. No issues.

When it was done, it fired up with no warning lights or issues.

The truck preforms the way it should've from the factory. Driveability is much better and it definitely pulls harder. I used the pre-programmed 87 octane tune. I can imagine a high octane and CAI upgrade would really make this thing go but I just want the driveability that was missing form the factory.

Backstory, real reason I got the Trinity is for a 2007 Cherokee SRT8. I've been driving it stock all along and decided to go for a CAI and Trinity. I'm going back the patch on Saturday so I decided to install into the truck today just to see how it does.

Anyway, if you have 6.4 Ram this is worthwhile. I'm just interested in the tune and unplugged it for now but will put it back to stock and do the SRT tomorrow.

FYI, I hit the back roads and set the 0-60 to movement and got this 7000# brick to 60 in 8.62 with 20" Duratracs. I know can easily beat that if I work it lol

Have a good one 8)

I have some more detailed info today.

The throttle response is improved at low RPM and it pulls better below 3000. Anybody who has one of these trucks knows they aren't drag racers. The 87 tune makes it a lot livelier but it's still a brick.

The one thing that bothered me about this truck stock is that if you mashed the throttle you had to keep it there for a awhile to let it pull. The 87 tune improves this but it would be worth it to get into the custom tune and play with the throttle response and shift points.

I don't have numbers and detailed analysis but with this truck and the 3.73's wide open throttle at 60kph shows where this tune works. Nail the throttle and hold it here and the pull is diesel-like. No, I don't mean Cummins power and it never will be but the power delivery feels similar to how a diesel builds power. Slight lag and then sudden, constant surge with a flat power band.

Top end power on the highway is noticeable, too. It has better response and just feels quicker. Shifting is more abrupt but the whole truck seems more abrupt performance-wise and I'm good with that.

Hopefully this helps 8)
