Shifting question... wont shift (5th) WOT

Post by Warped3d »

hey I was able to have a custom tune done by the owner of Depalma Motorsports and he made a huge difference in my ride its like night and day baby :).... one question I had was if i was gunning it, once it reached 85mph at 5642rpm (4th?) it would try to shift into (5th) and kickback. The only way it would let me shift was if I turned overdrive off and let off the gas a little bit and once it reached around 2500rpm in (5th) I could turn overdrive back on and resume gunning it... so we got to the point where I could gun it all the way up to 85mph and when it was about to redline turn overdrive off let off the gas a little bit then a second later turn on overdrive and resume normal driving :)... Now he told me there was no way to change the settings in the diablo tuner to let me gun it all the way with out having to turn off overdrive or letting off the gas.. Well I want to prove him wrong so what can i do, if anything?

Car is 2007 Ford Mustang V6

Warped3d, I'm having one of my tuners looking into this to see what he can come up with.

I cannot make out exactly what you are wanting in your post but to do what you need will likely require a custom tune by the sounds of it. 5th gear is overdrive in these cars in case you were thinking something else. I am guessing the car shifts into OD too soon for your liking and you want to raise the 4-5 shift point to a higher RPM? This may require raising some mph points as well. If you can explain it a little clearer we might be able to help. kickback? you mean downshift?

Ok well on my tuner.... i had a professional custom tune it and i was watching while he tuned it I have a JLT CAI so he used the JLT -91 octane tune and modified the parameters heres what he did

JLT- 91 Octane Performance Tune w/ modified parameters

-Idle RPM-
Drive RPM- 848
Neutral RPM- 748

-rev limits-
Rev limit 1 RPM- 5846
Rev limit 2 RPM- 5846
Rev limit 3 RPM- 5846
Speed limit- Off (for some reason when i look at it the tuner always has "on" selected)

-Shift Points-
Shift Point RPM 1-2 = 5842
Shift Point RPM 2-3 = 5824
Shift Point RPM 3-4 = 5742
(Up shift MPH was not touched)

Traction control- off

so on my tuner there is no option for "shift points 4-5" and I'm guessing thats where my problem is... because the first gears shift perfectly but when its going to shift in to "OD" at WOT it redlines and up shifts then quickly down shifts again and continues to redline..... unless before i hit "OD" i Turn off "OD" then my car shifts perfectly no problems soo what can i do to fix this so i don't have to continue to turn off and on "OD" when im driving on the freeway..... mind you my car only does this at WOT. help is much appreciated. thanks a lot!

If you have the cables to download tunes and revision updates you could send me the tune in the car right now and I might be able to make a change to it for you. Just go into Options, Custom Tune and Export Last Written tune to your PC via the DS Downloader software. Hit Export Last written then hit Get tune file from Predator and it should upload the tune to your PC and you can email it to me. Make sure you have the correct com port selected and baud rate of 115200.

Hey ,

I have exactly the same problem , as soon as rpms come close to 6 000 on 4rth , the gearbox shifts down to 3d for a moment then back to 4rth and after i lift off , it is finally gets to the 5th gear , basically i can not get up to 5th gear if i keep my
foot down all the way . Smooth acceleration to aproximetly 86 - 88 mph then unpleasant shift down lift off and all over again .
I drive around 80-90 mph all the time so to me it is a big problem . At the moment i have BamaChips 93 Octane Racing tune but it was the same thing with JLT 93 Octane Firm Shift tune too . I did only two custom things with Predator 1 ) Speed limiter - off , 2) All three Rev limiters set to 6000 . Maybe the Rev Limitrer should not to be messed with ?

I need some help , please !

ok thanks kevin i just sent you the e-mail...

and tristar i don't think it has to do with the rev limiters just because i had a professional tune my mustang and he was doing all the work and i mean i don't think he was going to change parameters that would make my car not perform to its fullest.

Hey,

Today I retune the car without customising anything , only speed limiter was set off , went to 100 mph with nice
shifting patten , no shifts down and hezitation at all , could not get to 5th gear , it was to much traffic on the highway .
I was wandering if the 5th gear is a real gear like 1,2,3,4 or some kind of overdrive which kicks in when the car is in cruise mode ,
design to save fuel when people driving on the highway with normal speed ?

Im not using the firm shifting im using JLT-91 octane performance with modified parameters and i had a professional tune it.
so i don't understand why my car shifts like that at WOT but hopefully i can receive and answer form kevin soon :(

Sorry Warped... I am trying to locate one parameter for that gear change. Trying to see if I can get you something before the weekend.

I was wrong about the the rev limiter , after i went back to the basic tune the patten of shifting down and up between 4-3-4 just moved 5-10 mph further up , at the moment i have stock JLT 93 Octane Firm Shift , just Speed Limiter OFF .
This is how it works now . Full throttle , 1 , 2, 3, 4 when it reaches speed of 90 mph /5800 rpm suddenly downshifts by itself to 3rd for one second then back to 4th , keeps accelerating . It only happens with WOT , the only thing i want from the car is to stop downshifting when i did not ask it to do so , it is really annoying me .
Any ideas ?
