Question about upshift torque management on 2014 Sierra 6L80

Post by gone_fishing »

I have the inTune i2030 and I'm running the 87 flex tune and the firm shift trans tune on my 2014 Sierra 5.3 4x4. I originally turned upshift torque management off. I recently turned it back on to see if I could notice a difference. Driveability seemed the same but I think shifting was possibly a little smoother or more consistent. I thought that sometimes (when upshift TM was off) I would get a random flare shift and shifting at partial throttle was soft and sometime more firm. With it TM back on, it seems partial throttle shifts are more consistent (same every time).

I'm trying to better understand what upshift TM actually does. Is it strictly to control timing advance between shifts? Since there are no torque management settings under the ECM settings, is this left alone in the canned tunes or do the canned tunes reduce it some?

Thank you

we often recommend leaving the upshift abuse mode TM enabled as it can lead to sloppy shift feel when disabled, as you may have discovered :)

TM on the engine side is already disabled in the tunes.

Thank you for the reply. I think I'm going to keep upshift TM on. I'm a nerd for details. Could further explain what upshift TM actually does? How does it differ from engine TM?

Thanks!

this is TM specific to when the trans upshifts in 'abuse mode' meaning heavy throttle/WOT, leaving it on allows the pcm/tcm to make the shift smoother, turning it off removes any timing/throttle adjustments to smooth out the tune.

Thank you Mike. Is there any reason you would ever want to disable upshift TM?

Great post. I was just about to ask the same question on my 09 Tahoe 5.3L 6 speed.
