Just getting started

I recently purchased a 2008 Grand Cherokee Limited with the HEMI engine. Found this diablosport intune tuner in the glove compartment. Plugged it in and fired it up and as near as I can tell, I was able to update the tire size. First question is how the tunes work and how do I know what they are going to do to the vehicle? I am looking to maximize fuel efficiency since my wife is the primary driver, but if I know the full capabilities maybe I will change it up from time to time. Also, do I need desktop software? I plugged the unit into my PC and it was recognized, but I didn't quite know what else to do. I have been around cars all my life, do all my own maintenance and most repairs, but most of my experience came from cars pre-fancy computer stuff. Just looking to get up to speed with the new age and if at all possible use this on my other cars. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram that I'd like to tinker with, but from what I've read so far it's too old. Anyway, links to other posts and threads will be greatly appreciated. I did some searches, but didn't find what I was looking for. I did download the full user manual, so I will be studying that a lot in the near future.

there may be a mileage specific tune, if not use any of the tunes for the octane you run to find slight increases in mileage.
