burned injectors within 5 minutes

Post by jaburles »

I recieved my diablo sport predator U7165 last week and within five minutes after programming to 100hp/200tq I turned a corner pushed the gas and it died and wouldn't start again. I had it towed to the dealership i bought it from and after testing it they said i had a high pressure oil leak in the engine and blew an injector. I was wondering why this happened and what i can do about getting a refund because now i am scared to use your product on my beloved $55,000 f-250 again. Please get back to me asap.

Well, not sure how a high pressure oil leak could have anything to do with the tune, in fact, it doesn't.
Unfortunately, these 6.0s have had issues for years, and it would appear that this was yet another random 6.0 issue, and not necessarily the result of the tuner.

Thanks

There is no way in hell that this is not due to programming my truck with your tuner. I have driven it for 17000 miles without one single issue and five minutes after programming with your tuner it blows the injectors. It was getting to almost 5000 rpm. I know without a doubt that if i would not have put your tuner on my truck it wouldnt be in the shop today and for you to question me over this issue that took place literally minutes after putting your product on my truck is very irritating. You need to let me know what i can do to get a refund.

5000 RPM ON YOUR DIESEL!!!! ARE YOU NUTS!!!! I HAVE WORKED AS A FORD MECHANIC FOR 8 YEARS AND WHEN YOU PUT A PROGRAMMER TO A 6.0L AND REV IT TO 5000RPM, YOU'RE GOING TO BLOW SOMETHING. AT SUCH HIGH RPM YOUR OIL INJECTION PUMP BUILDS WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE & THE ONLY PLACE THE OIL GET GO IS TO BLOW THROUGH AN OIL SEAL OR DAMAGE AN INJECTOR. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY INJECTORS OR HIGH PRESSURE SEALS I HAVE REPLACED SINCE THE 6.0L CAME OUT. THE FACT THAT YOU BLEW AN INJECTOR AFTER INSTALLING THE PROGRAMMER IS PROBABLY PARTLY DUE TO THE TUNING BUT MOSTLY HOW YOU DROVE THE TRUCK AFTER INSTALLING IT. WHAT YEAR TRUCK IS IT THAT YOU HAVE?

I would like a more technical explanation on "blew" an injector. The high pressure oil system has a pressure relief safety at roughly 4400psi. You can command the pressure to whatever you want but the relief will always keep you in check. The injector itself multiplies the pressure by 7.1 to 1 internally to generate the 28,000+ psi fuel pressure like a common rail chevy or dodge has. The oil is put into the top of the injector through the high pressure oil rail bolted on top. A spool valve moves back and forth to allow oil into and out of the injector to fire the injector. In the center of the injector fuel enters a cavity. The oil pressure above pushes down the plunger and pumps the fuel out of the injector directly into the cylinder.

Since the Predator does not currently alter the FICM (Computer on the valve cover) It can not over come the limitations it has built into it from the factory. The limitations are there to prevent the injector plunger from bottoming out.

HOWEVER. If the vehicles fuel filters have not been changed at the specfied intervals of 12,000 to 15,000 miles then low fuel pressure can cause the injectors to have a hard time returning to a ready to fire state. Base fuel pressure of 50 +/- 5psi pushes the plunger back to a ready to fire state. Injector damage can occur from this. The original factory fuel filter is marked with an FF on it to allow the dealership to know if you have never changed the fuel filters.

The high pressure system contains the high pressure pump driven by the cam shaft. The high pressure pump has a quick disconnect fitting that is prone to blowing out. The fitting attaches the branch tubes to the pump. The branch tube gets oil to the outside of the block where it is sent up stand pipes to the oil rails in the heads located just below the valve covers. There are O-ring seals at the pump, the stand pipes, the replacable check valves in the stand pipes, and at the oil rails at each of the injectors.

Ask them where the high pressure leak was determined to be found. There is a diagnostic check using block off tools that are inserted into the high pressure rails to block off each bank of injectors individually to identify either bank or by blocking both of them off to identify the pump or the branch tube.

A "blown" injector would have pumped alot of oil into the motor and hydro locked the cylinder. And if the pintle was broken it would have filled the cylinder with fuel and hydro locked the motor also, but we know thats not the case since you were able to crank it over a few times.
