2001 7.3 PSD Mileage

Post by dsquared »

I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3L PSD that I bought in November. It came with the Predator U7170 tuner, 4" turbo-back exhaust, MAC CAI, & Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite gauges. The tuner shows the revision as: Ford_7_3-7r19z. CAL ID is VRAA7Y6.

I am trying to get some decent mileage out of this, with diesel over $5.00 here now. My Predator shows the following tunes:

Towing Sport
60 HP
85 HP
100 HP
Altitude Towing.

When I bought the vehicle, the PO had it set @ 100 HP. Good pick-up, but I didn't need the power. I didn't really check mileage then.

I set it back to 60 HP in January, and on a 440 mile journey to Santa Barbara, I averaged 17.11 mpg. This was hand calculated, not going from the OH gage (it said 19+).

I set it back to the 100 HP tune a couple weeks ago, and did 484 miles commute for the week. ~90% freeway, 10% around town. My OH said 21.4 (WooHoo!!), but after filling and calculating, it came up 16.43

I restored to 60 HP, and this weekend I again did the Santa Barbara trip. This time, 350 miles @ 17.19 mpg. Gage said 19.8!!

I just retored to Stock Tune, and I will see what I get from that.

Do the above numbers look right? For the mileage and power gains you people claim, I don't see it!!

Gain will vary depending on altitude, driving style, and lots of other things.
See where you are at stock before we decide how the tune gains are looking.

Yes, I am running a "test" at stock setting this week. Back and forth to work, ~ 90 miles R/T, 90% freeway. Altitude is basically 200' above sea level (Los Angeles & San Bernardino counties, in the valleys for both!!) I will be doing exactly as I had on the other 2 mileage checks, CC set to 70-75, keeping my foot out of it except for freeway merging, and letting the "chips" fall where they may!! :)

I haven't had the stock program loaded in the 6 months I have had it, so I didn't have a baseline to compare. But I will now!! :P Look for a follow-up post Friday.

Alright, I'm a little early with this, but the wife has to take an Ex-full of people to a meeting tonight. It will be stop & go freeway, which will skew the numbers. So I filled it back up today, and here is what I got:

Miles Driven: 190.0 (90% freeway, 10% around town)
Fuel Req'd: 10.914 gal
Avg MPG: 17.41 (Lie-O-Meter said 16.6)

So, I am losing .34 MPG on the 60HP tune, and 1.0 MPG on the 100 HP tune.

Mike, what do you say?

I think I'd like you to try our newest revision once it is available, probably next week.

Thanks for the info.

Should I download the 7r19 file and save to my computer, just in case?
