Let's talk Acetone...

Post by neonhomer »

Okay... let's discuss acetone. Seems with the increase in fuel prices, a lot of people are starting to use it. Some people have seen increases of 2-3MPG while using it, in ratios of around 2-3oz per 10 gallons of gasoline.

I have a friend who is using it in his 2000 F-150 w/ the V6 and 5spd. Says the truck idles better, better acceleration, and of course more MPG.

I am wondering how the use of acetone and the parameter adjustment of the Predator would affect fuel mileage. I know of the potential problems of acetone and rubber fuel system parts, so save those comments for the Recycle Bin.

I want to hear from anyone who is using acetone AND a Predator, and what are your results.

Well, I'll start off by saying there is little to no rubber in anything built in the last 8-10 years or so, as all fuel systems are designed for use with at least 10% Ethanol fuel..../carry on....

That's one thing I was wondering. So many people have said problems with the rubber, but there is very little rubber that is exposed to the fuel in a modern fuel system. You have a small piece that goes between the tank and hard lines, a small piece that goes between the hard lines and the engine, and then a small piece in the tank that hooks the fuel pump to the pickup assembly.

There are rubber o-rings for the injectors, and plastic in parts of the fuel pump and pump sock. There are also o-rings in the seals for the quick disconnect fittings for the fuel lines.

One thing I was concerned with was the hygroscopic nature of acetone (it absorbs water out of the fuel and emulsifies it. Then this water/gasoline/acetone mix gets sent through your fuel system. They say the water can cause rusting of the fuel pump and fuel injectors. They say the injectors because the water will turn to steam from the engine heat. However, they used to use water injection back when to help cool the incoming air charge on engines.

I am thinking about trying it and seeing what happens. Best case is that I pick up another 1-2mpg. Worst case is that it toasts my fuel system.

Anyone else trying this, or want to try this?

How did this post die? What about on my super charged pic 'em up truck?
I'd try it, then again I took off the super charger and am selling my '03 and waiting (impatiently) to get an '05 SS Silverado and the air pump is going on that... buy my '03 please.
