Fan control

Post by JohnForeman »

So i was dinking around with the modify tune stuff and was looking at the fan speed settings. I know on the SRT8 (what I used to own), it was common to put in a 180 degree thermostat. Along with that mod, the fans would have to be reprogrammed to keep the engine temps down that low during city driving. Now with the camaros, I'm seeing that people are putting in 160 degree thermostats. But the fan control only goes down to 196 (i think, working from memory). Now I have been watching my engine temps (from the DIC) and it's been running around 196/198 in city driving, so I'm not seeing where I can gain anything. I would like to maybe put in a 180 degree t-stat and then do some logging and see if it really helps any, but I'm thinking if I cant control the fans to kick on at the lower temps, I'm not really helping much. So am I not understanding something or can Diablo give us different fan temps on request?

The newer GM engines don't really gain anything by having a lower tsat. They are designed to have there best efficiency in the 195-200 range. So changing tsat doesn't gain you much, compared to the older vehicles.

in the hemi's we got gains by keeping the timing from retarding as it did when the engine was hotter. You don't think we can get the same gain on the chevy engine? I was hoping this was something I could use the predator to log some data on and see if I got the same results.

nah... won't gain you anything... the stock t-stat is probably a 187* t-stat anyway... and like ya said, the fan settings start at 192* or 196*... so going to a lower t-stat won't gain you anything..

you can log the total knock spark retard, engine coolant temp, intake air temp, etc etc etc... whole bunch of stuff you can log...

the current hemis are prone to knocking compared to gm or ford engines.
