6.4l with white smoke

Post by jpaddock »

hey i have a 2009 f350 with the predator u7164, last revision was in about june or july. at first all my tunes worked good but as of the last few weeks it stumbles and blows white smoke out. thought engine was wrecked but when tunes are out it slowly goes away. i put tunes back in and it comes back after a day or so. almost like egr is sticking or somethin. this cant be normal, would it be a faulty program any suggestions? thanks

highly doubtful...sounds like a possible bad injector...white smoke is tough with diesels as it could be coolant or raw fuel. How many miles on the truck? The tunes might just be putting more stress on parts that are worn out.

I've seen it and heard of it, i actually just was speaking to the service manager at a ford dealership today about the 6.4L, he told me of plenty of odd issues with them. Are you getting any trouble codes at all? What is your cal id?

do you have the L30 update on your 6.4. if you dont keep it that way. if ford updates your truck, you will be dead in the water with the preditor untill they come up with a new update for the preditor. i have had my preditor for 2 months and cant do anything with it. when i bought my truck 2 months ago i had the latest and greatest program installed and been waiting patiently ever since.

Sounds like a similar problem I just had. White/blue smoke on start up and when I hammer on the pedal. Turned out to be the EGR Cooler, Oil Cooler and Head Gaskets were done. 50+ labour involved in that job. Ugly.

thanks for the info guys. found out the problem. dont understand it, but i have an nadp dpf delete module. when its plugged in with chip it makes the truck act up, so ofter i cycle the key i just unplug the module and it runs normal. might be a total coincidense but i tested it a few times.

i remember reading something about those modules and key cycling. White smoke sounds like its in regen mode. I have seen it before on a truck without a dpf and our extreme tune, when it went into regen there was white smoke everywhere...at idle it will fill up the entire street with smoke. Key cycling on those modules might reset the anit bounce counters, which have to do with regen.
