Problem installing new Predator

Post by Erock503 »

The tool is the U7186 programmer
bought new from retail store, will have to check the revision
vehicle is a 2010 Duramax 2500HD

The programmer makes it all the way thru saving the original backup. When we continue, it says it cannot install performance tune. Please check cables, accessories off, etc.

When we try to hook it back up, it says last tune didn't take, and will now install original backup. When it tries to install the original backup, it says it cannot, and the more info button says something about ECM locked for flash, -1.

We didn't web update the programmer with the newest revision yet, since we had to purchase the USB update kit separately, and it's not here yet.

The truck still runs like normal, I assume because nothing was written to the ECM. I am afraid now however, that it still thinks it will have to return the stock tune everytime we hook it up.

First thing i would try to do is update the tool to the latest, Maybe there is a little bug within that version of the predetor or trinity preventing it from moving forward.

ok, thanks Jon, we'll try updating it when we get the USB cable.

Is there any procedure I need to follow, since it thinks it has to restore the original backup still?

I'm assuming nothing was changed on the truck, and it still has the original stock tuning. The updater never got past backing up the original file.

yes, restore the backup first, then let it update.

Hi Mike, I would restore first, but it's telling me it can't restore the original tuning. It comes up under the more info button that the ECM is flash locked (-1).

It made it thru saving the original file successfully, but it won't install the new tuning, and it can't write the original tuning back when we plug it in again.

I don't think it actually wrote anything to the ECM to change the stock tuning however, the truck runs just like normal. It failed trying to write the new tuning after successfully backing up, and it can't write the original back on it when we plug it in.

Mike, got the USB cable. When you say restore the backup first, is that something I can do on the computer before updating, or does that mean I have to restore the backed up file onto the truck first?

It never completed installing the new tuning, but did successfully backup the stock tuning. The current revision I have will not write back over the stock tuning with the backed up stock tuning. It seems like it can read from it fine, it just can't write anything to it.

No, you have to plug it into the vehicle and restore the stock tune from the tools memory.

Thanks

Thanks Mike. Like I said earlier, it's coming up with an error code when i try to install the backed up file back to the truck. I was hoping an updated revision would allow the tool to write to the ECM.

I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow. Can I call your number when we have the programmer in the truck and ready to go tomorrow? This is getting very frustrating, as I keep going over the same points.

I can provide receipts from where I bought it, as this was not a used device. This is the only vehicle it was ever used on, and it should only be VIN locked to this truck.

just an update, in case it helps anyone else.

Turns out it was all related to not pulling fuses for the stock radio/amp. Once we pulled those 2 fuses, the programmer was able to write the stock tune back to the vehicle, and we were able to update the programmer online. Installed the performance tune without an issue after the update, and we were good to go. Thanks Mike and team! 8)
