InTune 'paper thin' back cover

Post by 157dB »

I keep my InTune in a padded camera case within a soft cloth bag
and treat it with love and care like a $300 device would deserve.
I was surprised when I removed the InTune from my case and found
a small dent in the back cover that was pristine when it went into
the case. Upon removing the back cover to asses the situation I
discovered that the dent could be removed with my fingernail
and some very slight pressure. I got out the micrometer and got
another surprise in discovering the thickness of the back cover is
barely 0.020 in thickness.
That is 20 thousands of an inch.
A human hair is 0.002 thick. A standard piece of paper is 0.004.
That means that the back cover of your $300 InTune is only about
10 times thicker than a human hair or 4 times thicker than a piece of paper.
And the material gets even thinner where the sides were drawn
up to form the cover. And yet just inside the back cover is all the
delicate electronics. I would imagine for the $$ a stouter case
could have been provided? :?

So as a word of warning, do not rely on the case back to be robust
enough to avoid dings and dents from normal use. Any sharp corner
or localized pressure can damage the rear cover. And a ding/dent
deep enough can and will reach the electronics inside quite easily.
It may look like a smart phone but it is not built like one.

would you feel better paying more for the device with a thicker casing?

I dont know what phones you are using, but they are thin, and dent very easily when dropped...and considering the volumes they are built in compared to inTune, you'd think they could be made of titanium.
