Unable to retrieve log from Predator

Unable to retrieve log from Predator
I have an 04 Mustang GT, virtually stock, with a u7146 v.7r50d. did a 10 min. log, and am able to play it back on predator. i have a serial cable to usb on windows xp for my PC. set to com 4, tried both baud rates (made sure PC matched predator). i followed the directions for cmr_dat but when i hit "Tools>>Get Log File From Predator D" the communicating window comes up then after 10 seconds says "FordpidDataViewer 'Aborting communication' it saves a log file but it's 0 bytes. ideas?

Did you install the drivers off the CD that should have come with your USB-to-Serial cable? If not, see the USB-to-Serial Cable Drivers topic under the General Support forum HERE

yes, cable from radio shack, used the provided disk. also downloaded original tune from predator and am unable to edit that? normal? as an end user do i have capabilities to edit a given tune on my pc?
RE: Unable to retrieve log from Predator
No, the tune edit functionality that is built into DSDL is for internal use only. Sorry for that confusion.
Back to CMR_DAT, did you have any luck?

here's my cable and the driver
no luck. ideas? also after reading another post about idle speed and what not i found my diablo even when transmission is set to manual, still says "idle speed in drive" and my rev limiter, no matter what i set it too, stays factory. i've had the car up to 140 so im not sure if the speed limiter is in effect. im focused on getting the datalogger working but i need help with all of this. doesn't seem to be working at all.

Unfortunately the CMR_DAT was written back when RS-232 ports were available on every computer and there were no USB ports. I've had to put a lot of special code into the 3.1 DataViewer to get it to work well with the plethora of USB-to-Serial cables that are available because they all have their little quirks. It is quite possible that your system and cable are configured correctly but that CMR_DAT is just not going to work with your particular cable because of this out-of-date issue. If DSDL is working just fine with your Predator, then this is most certainly the case.
CMR_DAT will be retired when the 3.1 DataViewer is modified to take it's place. If you cannot get it to work, your best bet might be to wait for that to happen.

What's an accurate eta on 3.1? More importantly...dsdl works fine (if i had a custom tune would i be able to edit it? i know i can't edit the original...) so im guessing the cable is to blame. can you recommend a known cable that will work (even if from your site) i only went to radio shack because i had a dying urge to datalog right now. with this delay i have no problem waiting on shipping. thanks for your attention john. p.s. SEE ABOVE: also after reading another post about idle speed and what not i found my diablo even when transmission is set to manual, still says "idle speed in drive" and no matter what the setting, idle speed is unaffected.my rev limiter, no matter what i set it to, stays factory. i've had the car up to 140 so im not sure if the speed limiter is in effect. im focused on getting the datalogger working but i need help with all of this.
It is very hard to give an eta just now. 4-6 weeks would be my best guess today, but that can change tomorrow.
The only setup that you can guarantee to work with CMR_DAT is an RS-232 serial port and cable. If it is very important for you to be datalogging with CMR_DAT today, then you might want to look for an old Windows 2000 era laptop with an RS-232 serial port. People and businesses are throwing these old PCs out nowadays. I picked up two in the last year and reformatted them and gave them to my kids. Occasionally I will drop something off at the electronics recycling bin at the local waste facility and there will be 6-10 old PCs in there.

great. last and final question...i'm not entirely clear...what is the point of the ds downloader? i want to be able to have a tune loaded and adjust parameters via the pc/laptop, then upload the tune (with the changes i've made) onto the predator in order flash the car with. is that possible? or is the predator interface the only way to adjust/change a tune? i just want to see the actual values at which the tune is set i.e. timing and fuel tables, and make changes as necessary. i know the "percents" in the fuel and timing adjustments on the predator correspond with an actual value but i have no idea how. in summation, can a tune be changed on the pc/laptop or just on the predator?
Only CMR dealers have access to the CMR software that allows them to modify a tune on the PC. End users must make changes on the Predator, which is a much safer subset of the available adjustments.
DS Downloader is very useful for a lot of update and backup tasks, see the help file for more details.
