7170 9R04 cold start problems??

Post by jermort »

Anyone else have 7170 9R04 cold start issues??

Brian M is actively working on my issue, if there are others out there, post up. More data for Brian will translate into a broader solution.

Currently too cold in Colo to test ( and still get to work), stock tune loaded.

Nope. No problem but I use my block heater every night in winter regardless the temp out and I am garaged. Also just got two new batteries at Les Scwhab with the highest cranking amps (850 cca) they had available and all I can say is WOW What a difference these batteries make!

Oh also the other morning it was -5 C and forgot to plug it in that night and it cranked right up. The batteries make a huge difference. It has never started this good the 3 years I have owned the truck with the stock batteries(750 cca) in it.

I spoke with a friend of mine at the dealership and he is telling me that there is a new flash for the pcm that will fix this problem. Allthough I am concerned that if I take it I will not be able to use my programmer, but I guess it does not work most of the time anyway so it will not be a great loss. I scheduled to get it done on Dec 30 /2008 so we will see what happens after that . Probably a difference in the ECU between the 7.3 and 6.0. My truck starts fine on the stock program, but doesn't like the predator tunes when it's below about 19 or 20f.

Unfortunately, I cannot garage my truck. I do plug her in when it is forecast to drop below 15f. She just doesn't like the predator tunes when it gets that cold. Starts fine on stock; I'm sure Brian will get her sorted......

Is that link for 6.0 or 7.3 motors?
I tried the link, but only get a main page and not the string.

Hey Brian,

Here's an update on my cold starting issues..

First, I have the 85 program loaded.
Was -4f yesterday morning. I had the block heater plugged in so the oil was definitely warm. Let the glow plugs heat for about a minute, twisted the key, engine spun over like it was warm weather and she caught after about 3 seconds of cranking. Gave me a big 'bark' and the fire promptly went out. Cycled the glow plugs again for about another minute and cranked again. This time a couple of barks and again fire went out. Third try, gave 'er some throttle on the second bark and managed to catch things and kept her running. Let things settle down for about 2 minutes and tried to drive off. The throttle was ineffective beyond just off idle. Best speed I could make was about 10 mph for a couple of blocks. Took a full mile before I could make city speed limits.

Just for drill, am going back to stock next time the forecast is below 20f for overnight.

Any suggestions??
