Getting rid of the 3000 rev limiter while in park......

Post by Derekj »

I have the 87 tune installed on my 2001 8.1l/allison. I turned off TM and increased the rpm limiter, speed limiter and adjusted for tires etc.
Question.....while in Park or neutral , I can't rev above 3000 rpm. I can hold the pedal to the floor with no increase of rpm . Can I get rid of it and does it affect wot response?
Thanks.

I guess because I want to know if it has anything to do to TM and does it in someway affect the power delivery whilst in drive. After 40 years of driving and racing all sorts of cars, trucks bikes and boats, I am still to blow one up.

no, it has nothing to do with TM or power delivery... there are specific rpm limits in the tune file specifically for while in park/neutral that won't let it rev past that certain rpm...

that limit has no bearing on power delivery when you're in gear...

correct... the rev limiter keeps it at about 3000 rpm while in park or neutral...

My wifes 2001 tahoe with the 5.3l can rev up to 6000 rpm and my friends SS revs up to 6000 rpm. This is what prompted me to ask why they can and I can't. The tahoe is 100% stock.

You guys are missing the boat on this one. We know GM does not want us to rev in park/neutral. The original ? was to do with this affecting drivable performance. 06MonteSS answered that one. The 2nd ? was ...how come some tahoes and silverados Can rev up to 6000 rpm in P/N and others can"t. Mikel, love you man but your answer does not hold merit.

Really?

OK, maybe GM put the limiter there just so people would come to forums and ask silly questions and then question the answers. Ha.

Bottom line:

If GM adds a rev limiter in neutral, it is because they have seen some sort of warranty costs arise due to revving the engine with no load. To remedy this type of situation, they will add a limiter. Just like they developed Torque Management to avoid driveline breakage.

I would love to hear why you 'think' they did it though, since you dont agree with what I have presented here.
