Disabling AFM

Post by JMatthias »

Hey guys

I just wanted to get some feedback from anyone who has disabled the dod on their trucks. I keep hearing that people are getting better gas mileage with it off. I don't know if this Is true or not but I wanted to see what the verdict is.

Thanks!

depends on your driving habits...

if you do a LOT of highway driving, then leaving it on will probably help you...

but if you do 50/50 city/highway, then turning it off helps...

I know for me, my normal driving is 50/50 town/highway driving, and I gained 2 mpg by turning it off...

truck guys have found similar gains as well... but like I said, it depends on your driving habits...

I disabled it on my '07 Avalanche and even with mainly highway driving, it helps. IMO, the truck is just too heavy to maintain the 4-cyl mode for any substantial length of time. A pickup may be different though, as it's a lot lighter. Also, I don't like the idea of shutting off the same 4 cylinders all the time.

2010 Silverado 5.3L : I have it turned off because it's a PITA. The main reason I did it is because I don't want to run into the oil usage problems and failed lifters because the AFM is turning on and off all the time, besides that it's a PITA...I gained about 2-2.5 MPG with the AFM off.

Bjl630 ill guess there is no more than a few hundred pounds difference between your avalanche and a pickup. Besides its not the weight at highway speeds that causes afm to cycle to much, its wind resistance (drag).
