2012 Dodge Ram 1500 (difference between 2nd and 3rd gear)

Post by JWM_Jankowitz »

Dear Mikel,

I have been in touch with Sean at HemiFever for a custom tune for my Ram. Really like what they have done with their tune especially for the Tranny. I believe my gearbox to be the 65RFE which is a 6 spd auto box.

I inquired about the 300 rpm difference between 2nd and 3rd gear and discovered the following:

For the 2012 model year, the 545RFE was recalibrated and introduced as the 65RFE in 1500 Ram models. With the exception of an improved torque converter, it is physically the same as its predecessor. The key difference in the 65RFE is the ability to use all six forward gears in sequence when using Electronic Range Select mode. In normal drive mode, however, the 65RFE uses the shift pattern of the 545RFE; thus never using 2nd and 3rd gears in succession. 2500 and 3500 models with gas engines received the 66RFE, a hybrid of 68RFE internals (including the gearset) packaged in a 545RFE case.

I just wish that all the 6 gears is used and spread out equally amongst the rev range.

Sean mentioned that he might be getting in touch with you as to see if Diablo can locate a "switch" for those of us with the 65RFE tranny.
It seems like a terrible waste having 6 gears and effectively only using 5 of them 90% of the time... Really makes one wonder on how many of the 8 gears in the new 2013 tranny one will have available.

I have tried to get value out of my 3rd gear in auto & manual both with and without the "Tow/Haul" function and in each case, the 300 rpm difference remains the same.

Do you thing that the tranny is fully configurable electronically to get a better spread of all six gears accross the rev range or would some internal mechanics need to change to make this happen.

Somehow I feel cheated by Dodge selling me a 6 speed gearbox with only 5 gears, if you know what I mean!

Mouritz

this is likely further into the way the trans works that something that can be edited in software, but we'll have to look.

Mikel,

If this is possible, it alone would be a reason why anyone with a 65RFE tranny would need to get an inTune
All I can ask is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE :P

Mikel,

I noticed Diablo just launched their release of tunes for the 13 & 14 Dodge / Jeep & Chrysler products. Great.
I hope this allow you a bit of time on the 2012 Ram 65RFE box issue.

I can fully subscribe that. I have a 2012 Durango Hemi with the 6 Speed box. I also have a custom tune from Hemifever (Sean). His tune really makes a big difference already in any way. Shifting is much firmer and it also now shifts further down and it just reacts much quicker.

It would be great to have more control via the Intune on transmission parameters. I think all of the Hemi Guys would be glad to have it! I'm even willing to donate an amount to support such features. The transmission and it's heavy ECO behavior is the real pain in the ass. Everything else on the car is great except the tranny....

It would be great to also control the downshift parameters. I live in a hilly area and sometimes you have to press the pedal almost to the floor to let it downshift. It should react more responsiv....
