OK what the hell

Post by 1st6.0GTO »

Did my ECM just now LEARN the settings made last week, which were the same as before?
I say this cause all week doing 3rd (3rd gear cruising was done between 55-60mph) and 4th (4th gear cruising was done at highway speeds 70-75) gear cruising at about 2300-2600 rpm my LTFT were sitting between -1.56 and -.78. With a -4 on the slope. WOT was at 0.00, and PE was at -4. At WOT I was seeing 2-3deg of KR and timing was being pulled to 17-19 deg all from a down shift from the above gears into 3rd or 2nd. IAT's were anywhere from 55-65 deg.

NOW after doing some driving today and running around, I see my LTFT have changed. They are as followed.

3rd gear cruise
2300-2600 RPM
55-60 mph
IAT's 65-70
TP % Angle 15-16%
LTFT's (now all +)
2.34/3.91
3.91/3.91
4.69/4.69
3.91/4.69
5.47/6.25

WOT (also now +) * after seing these #'s I changed PE to 0*
3.91/3.91

Timing
20-23 deg and NO KR now
Again this is all with the original adjustments I had made.
And now in 4th gear

4th gear cruise
2475-2600 rpm
75-80 mph
IAT's 65-75
TP% Angle 15-16%
LTFT (now all +)
.78/1.56
1.56/2.34
1.56/1.56
2.34/3.91

WOT
See above *

Again all with same settings, -4 slope, PE 0 (now). Timing advance 0
I would like to know how in the hell do the numbers change like they did. I know what I was reading on the screen and know all the other numbers during the week (and for that matter) last week, were in the negative for LTFT and timeing was being pulled at WOT. SO did it take my car a week or longer to learn the settings or did my plugs and wires I installed last weekend change things, or the now full take of Conoco gas alter the now new numbers.
Can anybody explain this one to me? And so now where do I adjust my Slope, I am and have been at -4.
Just incase we are talking about a 04 GTO 5.7L and this was all my original settings, see link-

Not sure why it would do that, unless your plugs where really fouled out or something, but i have not seen that before.
What i would suggest to do would reset your injector slopes and start from scratch since did do some changes that apparently affected your tuning requirements.
I would correct them again and then recheck them in a few days to make sure it does not happen again.

The OE plugs didnt look to bad, but they did have some "whiteish" build up on the ground electrode, right were the spark would form. Much like on an old cap and rotor set up that was long past due to be changed. I know that whitish build up will cause resistance in the spark, I would think the same thing with plugs as well. i also changed the wires which were OE as well and those I know have a good bit of resistance (my 06 gto wires did, when I changed them). But I made the plug and wire change a week ago. And filled up with the tank of Conoco 93 yesterday.
I guess my other question is should I continue to view my data in 3rd at the above speed and rpm or do it in 4th again at the above speed and rpm. Im just realy thown for a loop since I have the slope at -4, from what the numbers are now showing (3.91/4.69 is the new average), that -4 plus what I viewed should now be anywhere from -8 to -9. Thats a huge jump. Im just baffled.
I forgot to add to my OP that even with these out of the blue numbers Im still seeing WOT LTFT at 0. And no KR,

Hey DS guys I have been discussing this strange issue on the LS1gto forum and some folks have said it normal, the LTFT is gonna move about +/- 3-4%, which is fine, cause that only equates to .0624 of a differance from my LTFT sitting steady at -1.56 for over a month. So now with the LTFT sitting at +4.96 (average) thats alot more than +/- 3-4% and to also claim that weather will effect it I can buy, but not that much. Something dosnt seem right, cause the original readings last month were +3.xx on the slope, meaning the car at cruise lean and it is adding fuel, So I adjusted the slope to my now -4 to compensate and offset those numbers, the car (after giving it time to learn) went to -1.56, meaning its rich and now removing fuel. How in the hell does the car (on its own) go way lean for the numbers to now read a +4.69 average.
The realy weird thing is the car feels stronger. As i said I now has more timing, and no KR, and even with the LTFT at such a differant number from before the PE is at 0 at WOT.
Can the ECM change thing that much on its own? Almost like it wanted it back to where it originaly was (first installing Pred tune last month). Hell Im just throwing shit out there now. Im hopeing to do some more driving today or tomorrow and I will dataview the #'s some more, see if they changed again.

yeah, during the spring/summer with hotter/warmer weather, my ltft's are usually about -1.xxx...

during the winter, my ltft's go up to about 2.xxx...

so that's a +3 increase during the winter...

OH now you decide to give some useful info, thanks. I think Ill stick to the info I have learned and been given on the other forum thanks.
Im starting to agree with others out there in the tuning world about the customer/tech service with DS, not as good as it used to be.
Anyhow after doing a good bit of investigating and disscusion on the LS1 forum I have gotten I lot of info of realy good use.

PCM's relearn a lot of your driving habits...no matter what forum you go to, or how much you adjust and dial in your car.

my shit is tuned with HPtuner right now, on a dyno, and it runs different every other week.....as far as LTFT's go.

there isnt really a way to make a permanent setting to the PCM without it adjusting itself a small amount.....

its like a damn robot. i miss old school tuning, with a screw driver and timing light! :?

I agree, and now that I have the info and also know that my car isnt having issues Im good to go. Also sorry Monte, but I was looking for info and explanation, not crap, or jokes. I also responded on the LS forum to your statement.

Its all good. I now know my car likes to run on the + side of the slope. It kills my KR and gives me my timing back. SO as Kart on the LS forum said, Im gonna keep things where they are (-4) and see if my KR and timing issues comes back. And to see if the LTFT reverts back to - or if it is gonna sta now in the +. If the KR comes back and timing falls, Im gonna start adding to the LTFT in +1 amounts, till the KR and Timing level back out. Thanks.

How exactly does your car acting strange have anything AT ALL to do with our level of support?
Did someone pee in your Cheerios before you made that post?

The first reply came from one of the most experienced and knowledgable tuners in the industry, which I call having great support...
Then, Lew tries to rationalize it by explaining that weather will effect the trims, and you slam him too?

Man, chill out...these guys have helped you since day one, thats no way to say thanks.
