If I were to buy a 2018 Silverado diesel would I still be able to use my I2 or would I need to update to a newer tuner?

no.. diesels are only supported up to year 2010...

unfortunately there is no means of tuning the L5P at this time, due to the PCM being locked down by GM.

Can I use it as a monitor at least? I upgraded to a '18 duramax and would like to have a reason to hold onto it until you figure out the ecu.

it won't... because it can't read the ECM at all... so it can't get data from it at all...

It may get basic SAE PIDs.
