Driver and software problems

Post by Knightmare65 »

I am getting really frustrated uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the Predator U7136. My Device Manager doesn't recognize it at all now. Also, the updated DSDownloader doesn't and won't recognize the Predator when it is plugged in the USB port. I have followed all instructions that I can find, but nothing works. Is there some way for the driver to be forced into the Device Manager and is the a way for the DSDownloader to be forced to recognize the programmer. Need help ASAP!

So it used to work and now it doesn't? Or it never worked?

What type of USB cable do you have?

What version of Windows do you have on your PC? Vista? XP?

Yes, it worked before, driver included. Got an update when I first got it. Once driver was installed, I got what I needed, had no problem. Cable is USB to Serial, will not show up in my Device Manager now. I am running Windows XP SP2 on a custom built desktop. Windows doesn't recognize the hardware when the Predator is plugged into the USB port. It will recognize my camera and video camera.
Before this driver complication, it worked where I had to get Original Tune, so I did from my car. At the Express Tune Mode, I clicked both Send Tune to Predator and Get Tune File From Predator before I got the Original Tune. I have those files in my folder. I don't know if I did something wrong.
Trying to install update 1.9.9.4. into Predator. Have no idea what it does, but I still got just in case if there was a bug cleared up.

This is the crux of the problem right here. What else has changed on your machine in between the last time it worked and the moment it stopped working? Any new USB devices that you have added? PDA synch software? Virus or SpyWare software? Any MS service packs?

If the answer is "none of the above"...

1. What happens when you plug it into a different USB port? You should have more than one to try. Try swapping the port with one you know works, i.e. perhaps the one your mouse is plugged in to.

2. Re-install the drivers from the CD, reboot, try again?

3. Asking again: What type of USB cable do you have?

The USB cable is the one that came with the Predator. It is short with greenish ends. Nothing has changed or have been added. Virus protection and anti-spyware is the same. Every other device that I have can be unplugged and plugged back in with no problem on every USB port I have. I have plugged the Predator in with the so called driver (from disc) installed and without. My computer simply doesn't recognized the driver or device. One or both are corrupted and or bad.

OK, If the update 1.9.9.4. is not for the Predator, then I will just reload my tune that I had in my car. I hope I can do that still and won't have any problems.

Just looked on the Radio Shack web page that is on this site and the cable that was sent to me looks like the GUC232A USB/Serial Adapter for Mac. I ordered this from FRI. I guess I have to get an exchange from them. This may be my problem. I don't know.

Hold on. I Google'd this cable up, and it looks like it uses the generic Prolific chip. Try installing the Prolific driver for XP that we have HERE. Scroll down to the "2. Prolific XP/98 Drivers" link.

I did this last night, but no luck. I will try it again. I again uninstalled the software, rebooted the computer, and re-installed the software. I really don't think the physical appearance of a cable should matter, just the software. Like I explained before, others have gotten blue end cables, some clear, mine is green which matches the MAC USB to Serial cable.

If that didn't help then I suspect this is a hardware and not a software issue - your cable hardware has gone bad. We have seen cables here where the stress of use on the neck of the cable causes one or more of the internal wires to pull away from the circuit board. If you are computer savvy you might pull the cover off the cable and see if this is the case. If you have a friend with a cable you might try his to verify that your cable is the issue.

OK, where did you get the new cable and what kind is it? Damn, 40 bucks and it doesn't work correctly. I should be refunded the money for the cable.

I have a Radio Shackl cable and it works fine. Wasn't cheap, but the cheap cable I got on eBay didn't work.
