older gm's will allow you to rev higher in neutral/park, it became popular to limit the rev range in these gears in the later calibrations.

OK, maybe GM put the limiter there just so people would come to forums and ask silly questions and then question the answers. Ha.

Bottom line:

If GM adds a rev limiter in neutral, it is because they have seen some sort of warranty costs arise due to revving the engine with no load. To remedy this type of situation, they will add a limiter. Just like they developed Torque Management to avoid driveline breakage.

I would love to hear why you 'think' they did it though, since you dont agree with what I have presented here.
Mikel , read all my posts carefully and you will see the ? and answers given. Again my last ? was why do SOME get to rev to 6000rpm and OTHERS don't. Same year vechiles. I have never disagreed with you regarding that gm does not want us to rev it in P/N... but that did not answer my ? .So before you accuse me of asking SILLY questions.. take time out, breathe, and be the proffesional you come across as. Like I tell my kids, the trick is to read the question properly before assuming.

cuz GM probably changed calibrations somewhere along the line, so even though they're the same model year vehicle, the calibration/programming in the PCM is different, due to updates from GM...

Thanks. At first I thought it was due to the Allison tranny only.

Yeah, why GM decides to do things when they decide to do them is beyond comprehension sometimes....just know that they did it.

Thanks

I have a 01 Chevy Silverado 3500 4wd with the 8.1L and the rev limiter is set at 3000 rpm while in park, neutral, or while driving. How do I change the limiter to give me a higher rpm while driving? I have no take off power unless I keep it under 3000 rpm nor will it shift gears till I let off the gas pedal some?
